Leo’s POV
He sighs and reaches up behind his head to stretch his arms, the short sleeves of his school polo fold down with their gravitational pull, revealing his otherwise hidden biceps. I am currently squeezing past his pushed out chair, so his outstretched, rough looking but still slender, hands come into contact with my chest. “You right there, mate?”
He pauses and leans his head back to look at me upside down. “Sorry, Leo.” He pats my chest apologetically then retracts his arms from the air, looking back to the front of the classroom – the right way up. I make a face at the back of his head, wondering how I came to be best friends with one so… Ugh.
“Oi, Junghwan, where’s Eden?” Oh and so arrives the other ‘ugh’. He plops himself down in the seat beside ‘ugh-number-one’ and I kick the back of his chair.
“Excuse me? I was going to sit there, Wade!” I address the ‘second-ugh’, who had managed to steal the exact chair I had just squeezed behind a row of chairs and desks to get to. So yeah I was a bit ticked off. It didn’t help that ‘ugh-1’ hit me just as I was about to finally make it next to him, either.
“Go sit next to Macie,” He waved me off, shifting himself to an over exaggerated slouch in the chair. His lanky, naturally tanned legs were in the aisle in front of our row of desks but he was still sitting up enough to reach the desk without a problem.
“Why? If anyone should sit next to Macie, it’s Junghwan!” I say, pointing at the ‘first Ugh’, Junghwan. Macie is his girlfriend after all…
Well, I don’t want Junghwan to sit next to Macie, I want Junghwan to sit next to me, but I’m not going to let Wade banish me to sit next to my best friend’s girlfriend! Speaking of girlfriends… “And anyway, speaking of who should sit with who, why don’t you go sit with Eden?” Yeah, they both have girlfriends. Don’t ask who mine is, she doesn’t exist.Wade blows out his cheeks, “I don’t know where she is…”
“Well, that doesn’t mean you can steal my spot!” I pressed on, leaning against the desk behind me. I realise im being entirely too immature for a high school student, but I worked hard for that seat. I used up too much energy to be banished to sit with a group of squealing giggling girls – none of whom were worth my time if I honestly think about it.
Wade pushed out the chair, almost cutting off the circulation to my legs with it –even though he’s a twig and could probably get out without moving the chair at all– and then he slinked into the back row, probably to complain to Macie about how ‘mean’ I am. He sat down and, being the completely retarded unique person he is, he decided to yell out loud enough for the whole class to hear, “Just because you don’t have a girlfriend doesn’t mean you have to hog Junghwan!”
I heard Junghwan sigh again next to me. That’s the second time this lesson, and the eighth time today. That’s strange; he doesn’t normally act in such a subtly defeated way… But I’m the only one who noticed, right? Why am I always the only one to notice things when it comes to Junghwan? Isn’t this his girlfriend’s job?
***
“Anyway… Hi.” I shuffle around to the front of the recently vacated chair. “Why aren’t you sitting with Macie?” Seeing as they’re a couple, they’ve been sitting together every lesson. It was beginning to get to me not having Junghwan to sit next to, I don’t know why… I guess I’m just jealous that Macie’s stealing my best friend.
Junghwan just rubs his forehead and makes an exasperated whining sound. “I’ve got a head ache today…” I look at him silently, should I let him sit by himself? “And I think it’s from hanging around with her and that bloody high pitched voice she has.”
