I awoke to a harsh breeze spreading through me as I noticed I was on a hospital bed being wheeled somewhere, which I guessed was theatre. They nurses were in quite a hurry to get me there, I panicked. I began to jolt from side to side, attempting to get off of the bed. My efforts were useless. The nurse beside me had a plastic mask over her mouth and her eyes were wide and bloodshot. He looked at me as if trying to say "it's okay, just relax." But I couldn't relax. Not until I at least knew where I was going or what they were planning to do with me.
My legs ached, as if they had been fractured and I could only feel one of my arms. I struggled to keep my eyes from falling shut. I was drifting away to what I couldn't tell was sleep or death. I was convinced this was it, my last day. That soon I would be reminiscing over my whole life as it flashes before my eyes. I was wrong, thank god.
I felt the bed stop moving as the nurses and doctors let go of the bed. They hurriedly left the room, leaving me confused and pondering on what would happen next. My eyes fluttered fully open, but I hesitated slightly as the blinding light above me shone in my eyes like a laser. I heard groaning beside me.
I tried to move, nothing. I was officially paralysed but I didn't yet know if it was permanent.
"You don't understand..."
The person next to me mumbled. It was hard to decipher what he was saying but it was possible to make some words out.
"Please... My friend... Trouble..."
I guessed they were talking in their sleep as it was clear they were in the middle of a nightmare. "Who are you?" I managed to spit out. It was quite and my voice sounded different, slightly deeper than usual and almost as if I was half asleep.
"Wah!?" I heard the stranger beside me say. "Where am I!?"
He had obviously snapped out of his nightmare and was now focused on reality. "Oh my god, Saffron!?"
His voice was warm and instantly cheered me up. That's when my eyes snapped even wider than they had been. I knew that voice. It was the voice of someone I had known for so long, a voice that hadn't changed since the day he had found me in that alley way.
The sound of his voice in my ear again gave me a motivation. I managed to sit up with a knewly found strength I didn't even know existed. He began to cry as he ran over to me and hugged me tight. I began to cry too.
I had found Carlos, I was home.
