He awoke to a sweet smell of jam and toast. He sat up, gave his body some time to adjust to the light, stretched out his arms as far as he could, then went into the kitchen to meet his wife.
"Hey! Is there any more bread? God, I'm hungry!"
She smiled, then got a plate with two pieces of toast with strawberry jam generously smothered on top.
"Just for you" she whispered in his ear, before hugging him.
He took the plate, sat down in the lounge and checked out the window. The fog was gone. The trees dotting the 1 acre land filtered the sunlight in various shades of green and yellow. He opened the window, and breathed in the fresh air. He closed his eyes. This was... perfect.
It was near 11 am that the couple decided that they should go out to town. Nick went out and got the car ready to leave. The second he stepped out, chills ran down his back. He felt eyes on him again; just like yesterday. He swiftly went over to the car, shoved the key in and turned it to turn the car on. Clara slowly stepped down from the door, grinning, then closed the door. She slowly walked down, opened the door and sat down.
"So, what do you want to do first? Eat or discover more about the town?" he asked her, looking into her big brown eyes.
"I'm feeling hungry... but... lets go to a pizza place. I saw one yesterday!" she exclaimed, visibly excited.
"What?! I thought you were sleeping!" he said, surprised.
"Yeah, thanks for carrying me!" she laughed.
He reversed the car, drove out the driveway, and out to the road on the nature path. Huh, he thought. I didn't see that yesterday! He admired the beauty, but felt unsettled. The trees were thick. Thick enough for something to watch, hidden. He told himself to stop the paranoia. He looked over to his wife. She was beaming and excited. He let out a long breath, and continued.
They made it into the town. They parked the car along in the car park, and walked out, hand in hand, to find the nearest pizza place. They eventually found one, named Ricardo's Pizzeria and Italians.
The food was amazing, the pizza one of the best they had ever tasted. Clara took a Ricardo Special, whereas Nick decided to go the classic route of the Classica Pizza, or just margarita, which it was. They paid for it, then decided to go to the library. Clara desperately wanted to read a book, she was a huge bookworm. They entered the library. He went over to the non-fiction area, and told Clara to meet him there once she found the books she wanted. He scanned the various different categories, but one that particularly interested him was 'town folklore'. He went over to it, and saw one book. It was titled, 'the monster of Renneville' he picked it up. He opened the first page. As he was reading, a voice startled him.
"He, so you're the new one?" an old, male voice said behind him. Nick turned.
"Yes, nice to meet you, I'm Nick!" he said, outstretching his arm for a handshake. The man shook it, and told Nick his name was Luke, Luke Green.
"Nice book you got there. The monster was prowlin' last night, you know. Some say he will kill you, slowly, by infesting your mind with fear. Others say, he will mark you out. Protect you, kill the ones who cause you harm. Either way, he has killed."
"Oh, shouldn't this be in fiction anyway?"
"Why? It's not fiction." Luke chuckled "You would know. That house you've bought... well, just read that book, I'll let you keep it. It will explain."
Luke walked off, turning a corner. He laughed. Obviously, they were trying to scare him. It was a joke. A couple minutes, Clara walked over.
"Hey, look what I found!" she said, holding the book she was trying to find for ages, the latest book by Lara Bobkov.
"Okay, ready to go? We're allowed to take and keep these apparently, so no need to worry about renting it."
"Oh, because we're new? Aww that's so sweet" she said, humming a song from Adele.
Back at the house, Nick opened the book. He read the first page, titled 'The Monster Of Renneville'. He sat down in a comfortable position, and read.
'The monster of Renneville is a beast that roamed the woods surrounding the town of Renneville. It has been in all forms of horror books, and on horror sites(later on when the internet existed), such as creepy pasta, ever since Renneville existed. It will take form of something that scares you, such as the childhood nightmares, or maybe the devil for strong Christian believers. Only a few have survived meeting It in the woods, usually hikers. Those who do survive end up committing suicide. The most common areas he is found is Hyclode House, The deeper parts of Renne forest and of course, the Nylock Mines. If you have been marked(see marked symptoms) please seek out the help of the Mayor. '
He closed the book.
