I was packing the last of the things I had. Some people had fought over mine and my mothers stuff. 'I want this' 'gimme that' was all I had heard of the last 48 hours. The things of my mom's I had savored were mine and her pictures, her hoodie, her blanket and the necklace she's had since she was pregnant with me."You ready?" the social worker asked me. Her eyes full of concern. I nodded as I taped up the box of pictures. "Can I have a moment. Please?" I asked her. She nodded and went outside. I looked around the now empty house. My heart and eyes full of grief. Taking one last walk around the house I spent the last sixteen years of my life. I ended up in mom's room. My heart broke as I looked at the empty bed. "Mom why did you have to go" I whispered looking up at the sky. This week has been the worst week of my life. Sighing I left before I had another breakdown. Grabbing Payton, my one year old boxer's leash of the floor I whistled for her. She came running to me. Her tail wagging putting her paw on my foot. "Hi baby" I smiled at her. I told Shelby that if I had to go to a home I wanted to keep Payton she told me she would do the best she could. Payton is the last thing that my mother gave me. I was not giving her up. I would go through hell. I grabbed the box after I hooked up Pay to her leash. Walking out of the house I shut the door and walked to the car."This is Payton?" Shelby asked. I nodded. "Well she's not that big" Shelby said opening the door for me. I slide the box all the way to the left and let Payton hop in. "She was the runt" I said closing the door. "that's good news" she said. I gave her a confused look. "The foster home said you could keep her if she was a small/medium size dog" Shelby said as we got into the car. "Do I have to go to a foster home?" I asked her. "Well if we knew who your father was we could try and get you to go to him, but your mom made it sure no one knew who he was" she said as we pulled away from the house. "She's told me" I said leaning against the door.
"Well who Cass this could help you" Shelby asked turning into the other lane. "Joel Quennsville" I said. "the black hawks coach?" she said as if she didn't believe me. "That's who mom said it was" I said holding onto mom's necklace. She said he gave this to her and had engraved 'I will love you forever Roxy' on it. I looked back at Payton. Shelby had rolled the window down some and she sat with her nose out of the window trying to get all the smells all at once. Her stub wagging so bad she couldn't stand straight. "Well I will try and reach him for you. In the meantime you will need to stay with the Jones family. They are a bit weird but they were the only people saying you could keep Payton" she said pulling into a street. I tightened my hand around the necklace. My fingers tapping nervously on the window. Shelby pulled into a driveway and shut the car off. It was a small house with a small white picket fence surrounding the whole house. Flowers lined up alongside the front outside of the fence.I imagined a old couple living here.
"Here let's leave your stuff here so you can meet them" Shelby said. I unbuckled "I'm not leaving Payton in here" I said as I got out. She jumped over the seat and I grabbed her leash. I let her jump out of the car and she immediately started smelling the grass around her. She was so preoccupied in smelling the grass her stub continued to wag. "Girl if you don't calm down your going to wiggle your butt off" I told her. She yipped and jumped up on me. I grabbed her face and began rubbing it viciously. "Well I hope they are home" Shelby said pointing to the car not being in the driveway. I looked up as she walked up the sidewalk towards the house so i followed her. Shelby knocked on the door and a lady probably in her early 30's opened the door. She was in good shape, she had long blonde hair that was pulled back and bright blue eyes. "Cassidy this is Samantha, she's going to be your foster mom til we figure stuff out" Shelby said.I was met with a kind smile as I reached out and shook her hand Payton was at my heels standing in front of me. Guarding. "Well don't you just have yourself a little body guard" she said. She smiled at Payton and let her sniff her. "Yeah. She is" I said looking down at her. My mom had told me how she got her. Her father had showed her a little trick on getting a dog for someone else. She had token one of my track and field hoodies and laid it on the floor for the puppies. She would then stomp at them and whoever came back at her would be mine. (Sorry if this don't make sense. I was trying) That's how I got me my girl. I hadn't realized Shelby had brought my bags for me so I went to grab them. "Oh Hun don't worry about that Kendall will grab them so I can show you around" Samantha said. I left them there as she called for him. He was about 6'4 and maybe 220 pounds. Which would have been mostly muscle. His hair was a short fade and he had blueish green hair. "Cassidy this is my son Kendall. Kendall this is Cassidy" she said. I waved at him and he nodded his head at me. Grabbing my bags he took them inside. "Alright Cassidy i'll come check in when I can alright" Shelby said. I nodded and she started walking towards her car. "Alright sweet pea let's go" Samantha said. I followed her inside the small house. I was really nervous. I knew I would be okay but anyway it would only be temporary right?
