Chasing Indi

Screams broke the silence of the dark smokey night. I walked closer towards the sound that had echoed in my ears. The harsh screams led me to a misty alley where I could spot two shadows fighting. I held my breath and hid behind a concrete wall. A small peep lured my eyes towards a man harassing a girl no older than me. A small push from the man and the girl slammed her head against the wall and slowly drifted to the ground leaving a trail of blood above her. I quickly moved from the wall ready to run and that's when my eyes met his. My heart stopped as I looked straight into his dark soul. I knew I was next. I ran straight to my car, quickly turned on the engine then skidded fast onto the road and fled far away from the man.

I raced quickly into my empty house and locked all the windows and doors then dragged my feet upstairs straight to bed. Nightmares filled my mind all night until I was interrupted by my iPhone ringing. Shaking and dripping sweat from the ponderings of my mind, I answered my phone to a rusty deep voice.

"I know what you saw and now your next."

I knew he was after me. How did he get my number? How does he know my name?

I threw my phone against the wall which was then replaced with the images of the girl being slammed against that wall. I had no one that could help me. I'm all alone to fight this monster.

The sun rose and colours of orange and red flooded my room. I packed my backpack with ropes, a torch, knife, and other essentials that would help me camp out in the woods for a while until he got locked up. I knew how to camp and hunt from when dad used to take me camping before the accident happened. I remembered that an hour away from the city was my favourite secret place, filled with trees and rivers. I loaded my car and set out for the country.

I dumped my car in an abandoned factory and walked the rest of the way to make me harder to find. The fresh country air helped clear my mind and refresh my soul. Small animals lived in these woods along with a couple of deers who came to drink from the rivers and dams near by. The tall trees looked possible for me to climb and gave me a better chance of not getting found if I wasn't on the ground. After catching myself a meal I threw a rope up over one of the tree's branches to make it easy for me to pull myself up. The rope blistered my hands but nothing could stop me from getting up there. Once I reached a mid height branch I secured myself to the tree by wrapping myself against the trunk to keep me safe while I slept through the night.

Birds chirping above me and the bright sun woke me from my light sleep. I grabbed my knife and started cutting the rope, however, the crunch of leaves from footsteps arrested me. He can't find me! He can't! There here was stumbling below me calling my name. His voice made my skin shake every time he called me with more anger. He started walking further away from my tree until he stumbled over my bag and in that second our eyes met once again. I quickly jumped off the tree and ran further into the woods until I reached a dam into which a tree had fallen. A quick decision and I jumped into the dam and under the thick tree trunk.

The sun started to fall. Being in the water all day made my legs start to cramp. I had to get out of there and out of the woods. Dodging trees I ran for my life out of what I once thought of as my secret place. I could start to see headlights of cars moving in the distance and it gave me hope. Faster and faster I ran towards the road. A taxi caught my eye and I jumped up in front of it to be sure it stopped.

As I entered the taxi something didn't feel quite right. The car was reeking of booze and the seats were damp and mouldy. Smoke started flowing out of the air conditioner. Numbness took over my body. It was so hard to process things but with a sudden stop of the brakes my mind snapped back as his head turned around from the driver's seat and face to face with mine

"Hello Indi."
