Countless shades of green flew by my window as I leaned against the door, propped up by my arm. Different species of trees: oak, pine, birch; They were all blurred together to form massive blobs on the ground. I couldn't tell which tree was which and there were many I couldn't name at all.
My sister, Sarah, and I always seemed to spend our time in the car. We'd never stop in one place for longer than a week. Staying at hotels or just crashing someone's home for the night. We'd have to break into the homes, but we were only using the beds. We weren't gonna rummage through their fridge and deprive them of their well-spent money.
Sarah and I were basically polar opposites of each other. She had black hair, I had white, and our hair equally hung down to the small of our backs. She had amber eyes, I had blue. She liked fire color schemes - orange, red, yellow, and black - and I liked ice color schemes - white and light blue, with the occasional black thrown in.
Sarah and I were very different, however. Personality-wise. Whenever someone's near her, she'd have this intimidating feel that would make the person want to leave as soon as possible. She's sort of sadistic, but not so much that I'd want to leave and never see her again. I'd grown used to it over the years of having to deal with her and only her. Our parents were dead, but that's another story I'll get into at a later time.
People always asked me, when Sarah wasn't around of course, why I traveled with her all the time. "She seems unbearable to deal with!" they said. I'd honestly just shrug. Our personalities balanced each other out. She's threatening, I was calming. She usually had so many different looks in her eyes at once, I could never really tell one from another. Then there's me.
I was an open book really, not like there's much to read there, though. Only the first five pages of the book had words on them. The two-hundred double-sided pages afterwards were totally blank. Nothing to see. That might've be why whenever people would look at me in the eyes, they'd get creeped out. They're just empty of practically everything.
At first glance, it wouldn't seem like it, but Sarah and I were twins. Some might scream fraternal twins, but that's not actually the case. It's confusing, so I'm not going to go into that. All I'm going to say, Sarah's the older one.
We had two brothers, who also happened to be twins. I couldn't remember their names, I just knew that they both went off to study law. The memory of them was locked in a safe in the back of my mind. Like I almost didn't want to remember them. I don't know why I wouldn't want to, I loved the both of them. They made me happy and, since I'd been bullied in elementary school, they'd make me feel better while Sarah would protect me in the heat of the moment.
I moved my attention down to the book I was reading. "Fahrenheit 451." It was a good book, even though the whole premise of it was from a world that was "anti-books." How ironic.
I flipped to the page of the book I stopped at, ignoring the slight bumps in the road.
"Whatcha readin' there?"
I looked up from the book to see Sarah staring at me, occasionally glancing at the road.
"Fahrenheit 451."
"Oh, I like the action in that one. Where you at?"
"Currently, Guy is taking a book out of the vent where he hid it, unbeknownst to his wife."
"Gettin' to the good part now. Nice."
We continued on after that, in silence. Sarah knew better than to keep me from reading for too long. Kept my stress and anxiety at bay. Though she didn't know about the anxiety, she was definitely picking up some hints about it.
Definitely hadn't caught onto the depression, which was good. Didn't want to worry her too much.
I could feel the slightly rough surface of the pages slide off of my fingertips as I turned the final page of the book. It was a bit hard to follow in the end, so I'd have to re-read it to catch onto a few things. But all in all, a good novel. I closed the book softly and placed it in the small space between the passenger's seat and the driver's seat.
"Rate it."
"6 outta 10. A bit hard to follow in the end, but maybe that's because I read too fast."
"Bitch, you read slower than molasses."
"Shut up."
I punched Sarah in the arm, and she shied away a bit, laughing.
"Don't interrupt the driver!" she exclaimed through her giggles.
"I will drive us off of this road if I have to!" I threw back at her, mockingly reaching for the wheel and pulling it towards me as I acted like the car was flipping upside down and rightside up again over and over.
"No, sister why! You owed me ten bucks!"
We both laughed at our stupidity. The rest of the drive was spent in silence, the only words being spoken: "We're here!"
We stepped inside of the large hotel building we had parked behind.
Yay! Original story!
This is the first full chapter original story I've ever posted on the internet. Ever. So I'm kinda nervous of how this is gonna turn out. I've had this idea for years though, so I hope, through all that time, I've thought this through enough.
Hope you all enjoy!
