Todd and his parents stayed close together for the rest of the day. They went about the house like a convoy, following and waiting. If any of them needed to go off without the rest, such as going to the toilet or answering the phone, they would halt their conversation and sit in silence until they returned.
When Todd’s mother decided that although it was too late for dinner, they all needed something to eat, they all went into the kitchen and made something. They did the dishes together and tidied the kitchen together, all the while deep in conversation. They discussed what had happened three years ago, which was long overdue. They discussed what had happened since, Todd found out the real reason behind his mother giving up work and that his parents had nearly split up over it all. His parents found out about his nightmares and the fact that he hated waking up after a CHANGE because he wished he was dead, until recently that is. They discussed everything.
It wasn’t until Todd’s mother nearly fell asleep on her chair that any of them noticed what time it was. They had sat up all night talking and now that it was 5am the three of them trudged up to bed. Todd’s father said that he would call the school and inform them that he would not be in again, then they said goodnight and went to their rooms.
Todd fell onto his bed, exhausted. He had never felt so close to his parents, nor had he felt so selfish and so guilty. Over the last three years all he had been concerned with was he and what he was going through. He never gave his parents much thought and if he did then they were ok as it had not happened to them and they had each other. How wrong was he?
Stripping off for bed Todd stood and looked himself in his mirror. He hardly recognised the face that stared back at him. Other than looking shattered, he looked old, well older than he was, old before his time. His physique really had dramatically improved beyond the puberty stage but yet at time he felt like a scared weakling.
Sighing at his reflection Todd flopped down onto his bed and pulled the covers over him. Within minutes he was fast asleep.
Everywhere is so dark. Todd is running, running for his life, but running from what? He beating of his heart tells him he has been running for a while. Where was he going? Where had he come from? Where was he?
Todd tripped and stumbled and finally fell. He slid down a grassy bank and stopped lying in a heap at the foot of a huge tree.
Looking around in what little light there was he was sure that he recognised where he was, but he couldn’t be sure. It looked like the place where he saw Anika as the she wolf, but everything looked bigger, distorted even.
Noises, there were noises all around him but coming from nowhere, coming from no one.
A strange smell drifted through the air, not a strong scent and not one he could place but it was definitely there.
More noises.
The smell was getting stronger. The noises were getting closer. Closer and stronger. Stronger and closer.
All of a sudden a bright light appeared through the trees. It was where the scent and noises were coming from.
Todd’s heart missed beats as it tried to keep him alive.
Todd somehow knew that he had two choices; the first was to run away from the light and smell and noises; the second was to run towards them.
Neither choice felt safe, neither felt right, so which one.
TODD!! Someone was calling him TODD!! TODD!!!!!!
Todd woke up abruptly. It took him a moment to realise that he had been asleep and that it had all been a dream, except that someone was really calling for him. Reluctantly he got out of bed and trundled downstairs.
