When I finally woke up, it took me a few moments to realize where I was. A hospital. There were IVs in each arm and I could feel bandages around my neck. Flowers from my mom and brother lie on the table next to the bed. I reached out and caressed one of the rose petals in my hand.
"Oh good! You're awake!" A doctor says happily. The name tag said: Dr. Smith. "How do you feel?"
"I dunno. I mean, I guess I'm happy that I'm not dead," I lied.
"That's good to hear. Your mother and brother stop by quite often to see you. Speaking of, your mother is actually waiting outside. Would you like for me to bring her in?" Dr. Smith asked. I nodded. I didn't expect anyone to even notice I was gone.
"Carla!" My brother, Luke, yelled when he saw me moments later. He ran to my side and hugged me gently.
"Hey, buddy. How've ya been?" I laugh.
"Okay. Mommy and I were scared when we heard you got hurt. Was it that smiley man that hurt you?" Luke asked.
I shook my head, "No, Luke. It was some mean people at school."
"Why? Did they-"
"Luke, shush. Your sister just woke up. Don't overwhelm her with questions!" My mom scolded.
Luke hung his head, "I'm sorry."
"It's alright," I smiled and messed with his dirty blonde hair. He looked back up at me with his sparkling sky blue eyes and giggled.
"How are you?" My mom asked.
"Fine," I said.
"Good. We were terrified for you. At first they wouldn't let us in and-" she was too choked up to continue.
"Aw, Mom, it's okay. I'm here," I grabbed her hand.
"I know... I know," she closed her eyes and nodded.
"Daddy said that you wouldn't wake up," Luke said. I noticed he had bruises on his arms.
"Luke?" I ask.
"Yeah?"
"What happened to your arms?"
"Daddy was mad and he hit me," Luke looked down and frowned.
"Come here," I say and give him a hug. He buried his face in my shoulder. "If Daddy ever hurts you again, you tell me and I'll take care of it, okay?"
"Okay," Luke says, pulling away. A nurse was fiddling around with medical stuff I didn't know about.
"Nurse? Can you make sure my dad doesn't come in to visit?" I ask
"Of course," she nods and heads out to tell the front desk.
"We'll let you get some rest. Come on Luke," Mom says.
"Bye-Bye Carla," Luke says sadly.
"See ya, Buddy," I wave.
"We'll be back later, Sweetie," my mom kisses me on the forehead. I watch them leave and got this feeling like I was being watched. It was very unsettling. I tried to fall asleep but couldn't.
"Boo!" Jeff pops up. I almost scream, but hold it back. The heartbeat monitor speeds up. Jeff laughs. "You should've seen your face!"
"Shut up," I roll my eyes. "What do you want?"
"I told you I'd be back," Jeff says.
I roll my eyes. "How long have I been here?"
"Almost a week," Jeff shrugs like its nothing.
"A week!?" I blurt out.
"Almost!" Jeff exclaims.
"You've gotta be kidding!"
"Nope."
"Great. Catching up on schoolwork is going to be just fantastic!" I sigh frustrated. Jeff snickers. I roll my eyes. "I need to know something, Jeff."
"What?"
"Why? Why did you really come back?" I ask, shifting my position.
Jeff and I both tensed at the sound of a knock at the door. I look over at where Jeff was seconds before, but he's gone.
"C-come in," I call to the person outside. A police officer walks in and pulls up a chair next to the hospital bed.
"Hello, miss. My name's Sheriff Anderson. Would you mind answering a few questions for me?" He asks. I shake my head. I can still feel Jeff's unsettling presence. "Good. Let's begin. First of all, we have on our records that one week ago, your friend, Stevan was murdered. Did you see who it was?"
"Y-Yes. It was Jeff the Killer," I studder.
"Okay. And the day after Stevan was murdered, you were attacked by a gang at school. They were found dead. You, however, are still alive. What happened?"
I gulp, "Well, the, uh, leader was going to slit my throat, but, um, Jeff ca-came and saved me."
Sheriff Anderson readjusted in his seat, "How is it that one day, Jeff was going to kill you, but the next, he protected you?"
"I-I don't know."
"Have you come in contact with Jeff since he saved you?" My head was starting to spin.
A nurse walks in carrying a tray of food. She placed the tray on the side table, "Sheriff, you should go easy on the questioning. She only just woke up."
"I know what I'm doing," Anderson snapped. The nurse frowned and walked out. "Now, have you had any contact with Jeff?"
"No, I haven't," I say.
"Please understand that we are only trying to keep others from getting hurt, Carla," I cringed at the way he said my name. "We can't protect people if we don't know where he is."
"Well if you don't believe me then you won't get anywhere because I'm telling the truth!" I raise my voice.
Silence.
Anderson sighs, "Thank you for your time. I hope you have a quick recovery." And with that he left. I can't believe he actually bought that. Once the door shut and I was "alone" again, I sighed of relief.
I was startled by Jeff's obnoxiously loud clapping, "Encore! Encore!" He laughed. "Well done. I didn't know you could act."
"You don't know a lot of things about me," I say, venom lacing my voice.
"I have to know, why did you lie?" Jeff asked, ignoring my comment. That's a good question. Why did I lie?
