Her voice floated through my mind like a playlist on repeat, cheering me on to cross the finish line on my final lap around the track. "Come on Soph Soph you can do it!" over and over again in my mind, as my tennis shoes slapped against the pavement on the track outside the back of school.

Volleyball season was just around the corner and I needed to get my body back in shape. It was all for her. If she hadn't played I would be running cross-country by now. Volleyball was her passion and I was determined to be like her so it was going to be mine too, even if I enjoyed running more. If this is what it takes to feel closer to her then that's what I'm going to do.

I glance back down at my watch, 5 minutes and 56 seconds and reaching the final stretch of the track, 100 ft, 90, 80, 70, almost there... crossing the finish line with pride I glance down at my watch, 6:12 minute mile. Not good enough, her record was 6:02 mile. I can still feel her congratulating me in the back of my mind even though I'm not satisfied with the time, "Good job baby girl, you'll get em next time." "Thanks mom" I whispered to myself under my breath knowing no one was actually there to hear me.

I walked to the side and picked up my water bottle, squirting the water over my head and letting it run down my back through my long, wavy, dark brown ponytail, feeling the cooling sensation overtake my body as the water rolls down my scalp. Why does it have to be so god damn hot in August? Because I live in the middle of fucking nowhereville America that's why. The name of the town is actually Parksville, which is in Missouri located about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, but hey hang a left, across the creek, and through the field are all the kind of directions you would receive around here.

Just then I spotted her making her way out of the back doors of the school, prancing around with her little minion in tow. Audrey Butler, the stereotypical white trash hoe. She has bleach blonde hair, pin straight and flowing down to the small of her back, with a skin tone that was not anywhere near a natural tan. Not to mention the inch thick layer of makeup she always seemed to be sporting on that thing she called a face.

On her left was Maddi Prescott, a ditzy redhead who always seemed to follow Audrey around like she was queen of the world or something. I swear that girl couldn't even think on her own. If Audrey told her to jump she would ask how high. The thing is Maddi really isn't a horrible person, I just think she likes the attention she receives being friends with Audrey, even if she is treated like trash. Shame, I think past all the ditziness we could really be friends. Maybe.

I tried to keep my cool and avoid both of them by walking past with my eyes trained on the ground as I headed back into school, but luck didn't seem to be on my side today apparently.

"Watcha doing out here Sophie? Still pathetically trying to beat your mommy's record hmm?" Audrey sneered at me while Maddi looked on with a look of confusion on her face, God that girl was clueless.

"Nope Audrey just making sure I'm in shape for the season which starts next week by the way, while I'm sure the only weight lifting you've been doing to prepare is your Doritos bag." She just looked at me with her poker face not giving any hint that my comment might have got to her a little.

Now don't get me wrong Audrey isn't fat by any means, in fact she has probably got the perfect body in a guy's eyes. Huge boobs, tiny waist, and a huge ass, unlike me who possessed the body that resembled a noodle , at least to me that is.. I have no butt whatsoever, average size boobs, and a curvier waist. That was one think about her that I was actually envious of, well and maybe her popularity. Which didn't totally make since to me because how can the rudest and crudest girl in school also be the most popular? But isn't that how it works?Even in all the movies that seems to be the case.

" Hey Audrey, why don't you just leave Sophie alone and try to run off some of those French fries I KNOW your dad picked up from the diner for you last night, ya?"
