The guys and I were playing a game of dodge ball and out of nowhere something cuts my face. Big time. I look to see what cut me but my brain goes blank after what I see. Wings. Big number wings. On the new girl, Kat I think. Her long dirty blond hair in a braid that leans down her naturally tan neck. Her weirdly colored but pretty eyes are wide with sock. Those red as a roes lips mouth to me. “I’m so freaking sorry.” But before I could figure out what was going on I pass out.

When I wake from the incredibly uncalled for nap there’s the coach and my sister. Mom and dad were dead-beats so when Corinne was old enough to have custody we pack up and left them to their drunken fights, and screaming wars. We left behind us the cold streets of Colorado and move to the sunny place called Arkansas. My school was smack dab of downtown in the old Gazette building. The school wasn't really meant to one but it was. The Nurse's office was a small box like room that was normal very clean was a disaster zone. Paper strewn on the white tile floor to kingdom come. The closet open wide. Medication thrown on the floor with its contents scattered. I opened my parched mouth, but before I could ask the question Corrine answer it. “It was like this when we got here, Michael.”

The coach strata to talk small talk and then he asked me what caused me to black out. My voice cracked like heck then coach passed me a glass of water slick with condensation I fumble with it, nearly dropping it entirely. I tell him I don’t know .

I force myself in to sit up and nearly scream with agony. My whole being screams with pain. It feels like some is burning me from the inside. Then as sudden as it came it stopped. Corinne offers to take me home but I’m fine ,go back to work. She says ok smiles at me and I know she worried.

A short time after Corrine and the coach leave, I head towards boring math class with teacher that has the attention span of an ant.as I head up the white marble stairs after saying hello to Ms. Reins I feel a large shadow hang over me I look up the to the 3rd floor’s banister there the girl, Kat.

Her sweet voice like honey over corn bread with butter said “You can see them, can’t you?”

“What?” I had decided to play dumb and hope that it was my mind just playing tricks. Her red lips frowned then turned away .I race up the stairs pumping my legs.

Trying to keep those black wings in view I race to the top of the white colored steps that led to a red, black, and white hexagonal tile floor. She throws something at me. My time being an athlete kicks in. Thump goes the small silver object. A locket or something like it after playing with it I understand it as that. As she turns to leaves she says over her shoulder, “It’s in your pocket.”
