Chapter One

Muggle Problems

A boy lay awake in the dead of night, staring at the ceiling. He looked over at the clock on his dresser. It read 1337, he accidentally put it on military time and it was stuck now. A breeze blew through the window, giving the boy a chill. He pulled the blankets up to his chin and closed his eyes. Soon the sounds of sleep could be heard.

Felicis Atticus Sparks was jolted awake by the yelling of his father, Taos.

"The blasted thing! It never starts when I'm in a hurry," he exclaimed. "We need to have it looked at!"

"Well, in case you haven't noticed, the car IS nearly 15 years old," retorted Felicis' mother, Oriana. "Just take mine, I'm not going anywhere today!"

Felicis sat up. The clock said 723. He leapt out of bed and stumbled down the steps and went into the kitchen. He walked over to the cupboard and made himself some cereal. Felicis could tell it was going to be a long day.

"Hia Fel, glad to see you up! I'm off to work, be good for your mother," said Taos, and with that he swooped back into the garage to start Oriana's car.

Felicis' mother sat down next to him, a tanned envelope with a wax seal clutched in her left hand. She handed the letter to him silently.

Felicis looked at the front of the envelope. It was addressed to

He took a wary look towards his mother.

"Is this a joke, Mom?" he asked

"No! Of course not!" Mrs. Sparks replied. "Arrived by owl this morning!"

"OWL?!"

"You wouldn't understand, just read it."

He obeyed. He read and reread the letter.

"I'm a WIZARD?!" he said.

His mother merely smiled.
