Detention was exactly what Aspin expected. It blew. Mr. Zegola fell asleep twenty minutes into the documentary he had put on about the mysterious death of Jon Bonett which would be interesting were it not for the fact that he played it every single time he was in charge of proctoring detention. Aspin turned to Jasmine who sat at the other side of the room. She was already looking Aspin's way, mouthing word for word, the scrip of the documentary.
Aspin smiled, looking down at her desk. They waited and waited for the bell to ring, signaling they were free from the unending hell that was school. Well...at least their school.
Mr. Zegola continued to stay seated, his neck twisted in an uncomfortable position, his mouth gaping open as a bit of drool creeped it's way down the side of his mouth. Jasmine waited by the door, holding her backpack close to her body as Aspin walked around the desk and out the door.
"So?" She asked, over to Aspin.
"So?" Aspin asked, knowing exactly what Jasmine was asking about. She wanted so badly to say no and just leave it, but Aspin knew that Jasmine wouldn't let that be the answer and then let it go. No. She needed Aspin to say yes, especially since Jasmine knew she did want to go.
With just the look Jasmine gave Aspin, she knew her friend wouldn't say no. Jasmine wove her arm through Aspin's and hugged tightly.
"We getting ready at mine?" Jasmine asked, already knowing the answer. There was no way Aspin would take Jasmine back to her house to get ready. There were too many people who didn't respect anyone's privacy. The only time Aspin would take Jasmine over to her place was when she knew that Jankins was out of town, looking for new recruits. That happened around twice a month. The next time he was scheduled to go out was in a couple of weeks. As he put it, he liked to keep the girls rotating new faces and all. The truth was, no matter how long she was around Jasmine, Aspin would always be embarrassed of the life she led. She didn't want to, Jasmine loved her and Aspin did the same in return, but having grown up with a man who did pornography and had no respect for any woman was something she would never be able to own. Jankins was a sick man in more ways than one, but she would never be able to let him go because for a long part of her life, he was the one there. She is who she is because of him. Which sucked go admit, but it was true.
Without saying a word, both girls climbed into 'The Thing' and started towards Aspin's house.
"If you want, you can crash at mine." Jasmine offered, looking both ways before taking a left.
"Naw, I have things to do before tomorrow and want to go talk to Bennett before leaving The Shack." Aspin said, digging in her back pack for her phone.
"You still want to leave the Shack to go work for Mr. Gregor?" Jasmine asked, her words laced with concern.
"Well it's not like I have much of a choice. I need the money and working at The Shack isn't cutting it anymore." She responded, hating that she even brought up Bennett, The Shack, and Mr. Gregor.
"Come on nugget...you know that guy is a creep. His last girlfriend was younger than you and he is 58." She groaned, hating the idea of Aspin working at Mr. Gregor's night club. Most girls went to him because they knew that he accepted underaged girls to both serve and dance for the men that went there. The girls that went to him normally started off only serving drinks but eventually they all ended up taking their clothes and off for the extra cash.
"Just let me talk to Killian...I'm sure he has something he can get you to do-"
"No." Aspin answered quickly.
"And why not? It's better than being around a bunch of old drunk guys trying to feel you up." Jasmine bit back, turning to look at Aspin.
"Why not? Because he is your boyfriend and I know nothing about cars or how to sell them. He would give me something that wouldn't require much and then pay me an insane amount of money for doing nothing more than being your friend" Aspin responded, getting annoyed by the fact that she just didn't get it. Nothing in this life is free. She knew that. Something good always had to come to a stop for her. Nothing could ever be easy.
"Okay...then let's talk to someone else. Just not Mr. Gregor." Jasmine pleaded.
Aspin didn't say anything, didn't promise anything, didn't even look at Jasmine. Promising she wouldn't go with Mr. Gregor was a lie and she wouldn't lie to her best friend's face. So instead of lying, she just continued to stay silent. Jasmine wouldn't let this go. She would do everything in her power to make sure that Aspin didn't end up at Adam&Eves. It just wasn't an option.
