A small child was leaning against a large oak tree near his house.
"I really like you tree.Your strong, big, and beautiful. You let me lean on your trunk when it's hot,and you shade me with your leafy branches."The child's eyes slowly closed."I...really...like you"The child muttered one more time before drifting into a blissful sleep. The boy suddenly jolted awake when he felt a cold drop on his cheek."Oh no,I think it's gonna rain."The young boy started to whimper.
"Little boy why are you crying?"
The child felt something caressed his cheek.
"Huh?Who said that?"The boy whipped his nose on his sleeve.
"I did.The big strong and beautiful tree."
The child turned around quickly and found himself looking at a face right in the middle of the trunk.
"WOAH!!You can talk?!Thats soooooo cool!!"
The tree let out what seemed to have sounded like a chuckle.
"I guess it is pretty cool, huh? Can you please answer my earlier question?"
"Uh....o-ok.I was crying cause I don't like the rain."
"How can you not like the rain, young one?It keeps me and many other living things alive."
"I know....but I don't like the loud thunder and the scary wind that knocks things down."It had started to drizzle and the little boy was trying to hold back tears. Then suddenly BOOM BOOM BOOM!!The little boy screamed and hugged the tree's trunk, and began to cry.
"Don't cry,young one."The tree said soothingly.
"B-B-But the- thunder" The child replied in-between sobs.
"Young one if its bothering you so,I'll shield you from the storm."
"R-Really?"
"Yes.You see that little nook that is in my trunk a tiny bit above you?"The child looked up.
"Uh huh"
"I think your small enough to fit in there and then when you get comfortable I'll use my branches as a kinda of blanket for you,ok?"The boy nodded. He got up into the small but cozy nook. Then the tree began to move and bend his branches.
"Wow...."The young boy marveled at how graceful the tree looked. The boy giggled with delight as the branches wrapped him up snuggly.
"Your so nice Mr.tree."
The nook vibrated as the tree let out another hearty chuckle.
"So it seems you have a name for me already."
"Yup!"
"Then what can I call you?"
"Owen!"
"Ok,Owen how old are you?"
"I'm gonna be six!"The little boy sticked out six fingers as to make a point.
"How old are you?I bet your really old since your so big."
"I am really old.I've probably been here longer then your grandparents."
"Woah....that's old."Owen breathed.
"Yes,yes it is..."
The little boy frowned.
"Hmmmmm."
"What's wrong Owen?"
"Well it's just I always come here to play and stuff but you never talked to me before."
"......Well the last time I tried to talk to a human it didn't end to good...."
"Oh....I'm sorry did I make you sad?You sound upset."
"No,no,no.Your probably the best thing that has happened to me in years. Its just I prefer not to live in the past."
"Oh,ok."
-silence-
"Mr.tree if I take a nap will you make sure I won't fall send keep me safe?"
"Of course."
"Then can I please take a nap-yawns-I'm sleepy."
"Go ahead young one."The tree replied soothingly, and so he did.
Owen's eyes fluttered opened. He looked around to see that the rain had stopped and he was still wrapped protectively with branches. The little boy giggled.
"I see your up."
"Uh huh!"
"Would you like to get down?"
"Ummm....yeah I want to walk."Owen squealed in delight as the branches gently lifted him and placed him on the ground. The little boy walked a little to feel his legs again. Then he ran and gave his leafy friend a hug.
"Thank you!Mr.Tree I wanna be friends!Can we?"
"What do you mean?We already are!"The little boy jumped excitedly.
"Yay!I can't wait!We can eat ice cream.I could climb you!I'll visit as soon as I can ok?"
"Ok now run along home young one, your mother must be worried."
"Oh,that right!Momma was making my favorite today for lunch!Thank you for everything!I really really like you."
"I really really like you too so please visit ok?"
"I promise!",and with that Owen began to run home.

Owen threw open the front door and ran to the kitchen.
"MOMMA?MOMMA I MET A TALKING TREE AND HE SAID WERE FRIENDS!!"
Owen slowed his run to a quick walk or else his mother would scold him.
"Momma, did you hear me?Momma-"Owen entered the kitchen only to be hit by a burning smell.
"Momma?I think the food burned.Momma where are you?"Owen giggled."Are we playing hide and seek?"Owen walked around countertop to turn the stove off. When he saw it.The image that haunted him for the rest of his life. His mother was lying in a pool of her own blood and was face down.Owen fell to his knees.
"M-momma...what's wrong."Owen's voice cracked and he started to crawl to his mother.
"Momma-I don't like this game..."The little boy was sobbing hysterically now.He couldn't help it.He shook did his mom.
"Momma come on!Wake up!"
"O-Owen?"
"Momma!Mommy please tell me what's wrong why are you like this?"
"I'm sorry you have to see me like this Owen."
"It's ok momma.Its ok."
"I really really love you Owen."
"I really really love you too momma."
His mother smiled and closed her eyes and took her last breath.
