Chapter 1 (6 years later)

I was in bed, half asleep. Flynn Devore sat by my bedside, singing a lullaby to me. He finished then leant in for a kiss. His warm, lush lips pressed against mine. Suddenly my alarm started to go off. "Aubrey!" It sounded. "Aubrey!" It repeated. "AUBREY!!"

I woke up with a jolt.

"Huh? Hmm, what?" I said, absolutely confused.

"Aubrey what time did you get to bed last night?" Mrs Crescenzi asked me, half laughing, half raising an eyebrow sceptically.

"Uhhhhhh he...he...he...." I said rubbing the back of my head.

I had been up all last night making a birthday present and card for my absolute, number 1, super cute, crush in the whole wide world!!!! Flynn Devore was the nicest cutest (in my opinion anyway), smartest, most funny guy in my grade. Today it was his birthday. I was going to give him my homemade gift. If I could get past the embarrassment....

Does it count as homemade if you live in a boarding school castle thing? I didn't know.

I had been at the Clear-Lake academy boarding school since I was taken in by Mrs Crescenzi 6 years ago.

"Well did you do your homework, Aubrey?" She asked, hopefully.

I didn't answer. I just shrunk back down into my chair. I felt my face go bright red and hot, laughing a little to hide my embarrassment.

Mrs Crescenzi sighed. She knew I was smart, I just didn't... Embrace it. If I actually did all of my work I could be top of the class no problem. The only thing that held me back was boredom!

I didn't like mathematics, English or science and much as I liked the specialized classes for everyone's abilities. Mrs Crescenzi tried to get me to try but failed.... Miserably.

She looked disappointed but then just went back to the lesson. Mrs Crescenzi was like a mother to me. I would say 'like the mother I never had' but technically I had one. I just ran away from her 6 years ago and haven't seen her since.

She loved me, and I loved her. She sort of favourited me over the other students...

Ok, I was her favourite, I was like her daughter. But no matter our relationship she was still my teacher and I still had to do my work...

She called on me, asking me what a square root was.

"A square root is the opposite of a square number. Basically, if you multiplied 3 by 3 the answer would be 9. 9 is a square number. So basically a square root is the 'root' of the square number/ the square root of 9 would be 3 because 3 multiplied by itself is 9. Every number has a square root though. It's complicated." I answered without a sweat. This stuff was easy but so boring.

"I see you've been doing some homework at least Aubrey! Well done!"

"Oh, I learnt that in year 1..."

I tried not to sound like a smarty-pants, know it all. But I was bad at that.

I tried to explain that to my friends but they didn't believe me. I had to remind them that the key word was tried after all.

For the rest of the lesson you talked on and on about squares and square roots and then some how we got on the topic of the shape, and not the mathematical expression.

I was as bored as a football dad watching a ballet. My friends hated when I said that because it was stereotypical and sexist but I said it anyway to annoy them.

After failing to explain the difference between the shape and the expression, she dismissed us for the rest of the day.

I snuck up behind my BFFs, Talia and Hailey and yelled, straight into their ears.

"WE'RE FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

They cupped their ears but generally were not fazed (I did it to them a lot).

"Not yet, I still have a private training lesson with Mr Muno, I still haven't been able to get the growing spell," Talia complained after un-cupping her ears.

The witch had trouble with some of her spells. Charms, Jinxes and hexes she could get but most others went out the window that was her brain. Few things managed to stay put on the little window ledge in her mind, but we love her all the same.

"We don't have to come, do we? I hate watching you casting spells! Its unnatural!" groaned Hailey.

"Says the one who purposely changes the natural track of the human body, and can do so to anyone at any time," I say sarcastically, but still laughing.

"Hey, healing is different, it helps people!"

"Unless little miss agro fairy comes to visit and you end up morphing their face up."

Talia laughed.

"That was one time! And he deserved it!" Hailey demanded, crossing her arms. The poor boy whose face she had accidentally deformed earlier this year walk past, yelling "Did not!" but we ignored him.

"Anyways you're still coming. I need support so I don't lose my mind!"

"I mean, I would but....... Ok, I have nothing else to do but I'll get bored."

"We're doing it next to the lake so you can go swimming or whatever you water sprites are supposed to do."

"Ughh Fine," She knew my weakness to water, I couldn't help it. "But only as long as I get to practise my water bending."

"Sure whatever" Talia shrugged as if it was nothing but I knew she loved it when I did that.

We all walked outside, through the courtyard, across the grassy plain (where I first came myself to the castle), and out to the lake.

I decided to use my time to write in my Diary instead of water bending. I had gotten enough practice although I loved to do it.

I sat down, set out my pens and got out my diary. As soon as my pen touched the page, I was in another world (which mostly consisted of Flynn ).
