ZEUS'S PAWN.
"Tell me that story about Zeus's pawn, Derek," her soft, fluttery voice whispers. My eyes lock with her eager, twinkling, hazel eyes.
"All right. How should I start it?"
She smiles. "The same way all the best stories start. With the words 'once upon a time'."
I roll my eyes in amusement and take a deep breath.
"Once upon a time, there was a guy, who was known to be a pawn-" I start.
"Zeus's pawn, right?" I give her a look and she bites her lip. "Sorry. Just making sure you're telling me the right story," she mutters.
"This is the only story I tell you, Alyelle. You've heard this a million times."
She briskly nods, urging me to continue. I open my mouth and clear my throat.
"Once upon a time, there was a pawn. Zeus's pawn, to be exact," I say with a stern look towards her, as a small grin starts to form on her face. "However, Zeus's pawn wasn't always the way he was then. In fact, he used to be a mortal - a human - who grew up normally in a time period like this."
"Like you?" she questions. I feel a flash of hesitation but nod, nevertheless, shrugging carelessly.
"Like me. But on one sunny, humid evening, when the sun was almost gone, amidst the sky's rays of colorful violets, oranges, and reds, that boy died."
"How?" she demands, just as she always does. I shake my head.
"You know that's irrelevant to this story." She shrugs.
"I figure that some time, you'll eventually tell me or come up with something to say," she replies simply. I smirk and shake my head knowingly.
"Not today, Alyelle. Anyway, when this boy was on the brink of death, within the bright light, he saw someone. Don't really have to go into specific descriptions but it was a young man with golden brown eyes and mischevous smile."
"Just like an angel," Alyelle nods. "With your eyes. Sometimes, I wonder if you're an angel," she jokes. I ignore her comment.
"Back to story, Alyelle. This person said something that would remain in the boy's heart forever. He said 'I am Zeus, the king of all gods. You shall be reborn in my fellowship as my pawn.' With that, the man who called himself Zeus gripped the boy's right hand and pulled him back to the living."
"Then what?" She laughs at my poor imitation of a booming, masculine voice.
"Well, that next time the boy woke up, he met a lovely girl, with sunshine colored hair and eyes the color of a bright jungle. Kinda like you, Alyelle. But with green eyes." She smiles heartily. "Then, he reached for her hand-"
"And there was a spark," she interjects. I grimly nod.
"The poor girl who tried to help him got paralyzed because he received a terrible curse from his keeper, Zeus."
"Zeus's weapon is the thunderbolt. The poor boy couldn't touch anyone, in fear of hurting them like he did to the girl," she adds, knowing the story by heart.
"That's right," I whisper.
"Excuse me. Alyelle, the preparations for your surgery's ready now. You'll be able to walk again!" a nurse says, entering Alyelle's room with a smile. My golden eyes harden at the sight of the nurse, as she turns toward me. So soon? Already? "I'm so sorry. You'll have to leave now, so Alyelle can get prepped for her surgery. You 'll see her when we're done operating."
I get up to go but Alyelle desperately reaches for my hand. I take a step away from her, pulling it back quickly.
"You've told me the story of Zeus's pawn many times, Derek. Yet, you still haven't told me an ending," she whispers with a slight hint of keen expectancy. "Will you tell me? How everything becomes a 'happily ever after'?" I give her an obliged grin, leaning close, but making sure we never touch.
"The girl wakes up in a hospital, without remembering how she got there. But there's a boy. The same boy who put her there in the first place, although she doesn't know it. A boy who visits her every single day.-"
"Giving her dazzling gifts. I got that. Then what?"
"Sir, we need to go now. The surgeons are waiting," the nurse says.
"Well, the girl goes into surgery and it is successful. She lives happily ever after. The end," I finish. She frowns.
"What about the boy? What happens to him?" I smile sadly. I'll miss her very much.
"When she wakes up, she'll realize that the boy initially hurt her, but cared for her and prayed to his god - Zeus - that the girl would be away from harm for the rest of her peaceful life. She forgives the boy and never sees him again. Eventually, she forgets and lives a wonderful life, full of happiness."
"But what happens to him?" she presses on.
"The boy remains as Zeus's pawn, doing the god's bidding for the rest of eternity. Even long after the girl's gone. But he'll never forget that girl. The first person whom he met after he turned into a pawn. The beautiful girl who forgave him for hurting her with his curse."
"Sir-"
"Please, Derek, hold my hand? Until I have to enter the surgical room. Until you no longer can," she asks warily. I give her a hopeless look.
"I'm sorry, Alyelle. So sorry for everything. Everything." Her eyes widen.
"Derek, hold my hand. That's all I'm asking. Please," she cries desperately.
"Zeus' pawn has a terrible curse from his keeper known as Zeus."
Alyelle's eyes tear up as she blinks in surprise. "Derek?"
"I'm sorry, Alyelle. My touch has changed your life - for the worse. I didn't ask to be a pawn." A single tear drips down her cheek, a mark of her sadness on her solemn face. She now understands.
I swallow loudly, watching her beautiful face with slight desperation. Perhaps even some love. "Change the ending. You can change it!" she tells me, a sense of urgency and hoplessness in her voice. I shake my head.
"I'm sorry, Alyelle. Goodbye," I gaze longingly at her for a moment more, before I turn away.
"Derek!" she shouts in despair. My eyes close. Why does she have to make things so hard?
"The deed's done, Zeus. I've taken care of Alyelle and am ready to let her go. What's next?" I ask, hoarsely.
"Well done, my pawn. Remember, you brought this upon yourself. I warned you not to touch a human being until I spoke with you about the gift I have bestowed you," he says, appearing next to me, golden brown eyes glittering.
I turn back to see the closed door, cursing my electric touch. For one single moment in my sorry after-life, I felt truly happy. Satisfied to just see her smile. Yet, my touch has cursed her enough. I'm no longer needed. She'll be all right on her own. I sigh deeply. Some gift.
I wish I could change it.
