A Drop in the Ocean - Ron Pope
Your POV
It's graduation day. The infamous four best years of my classmates and I's lives has officially come to an end and I'm actually really upset. I shouldn't because I basically kept my nose inside dusty pages of books and never talked to anyone other than my twin brother, Jake. Social anxiety got the best of me so I just kept my mouth shut.
So I'm sitting in the bleachers with my family in the ridiculous blue cap and gown they made the seniors clear their wallets for. My eyes are scanning the football field and I see that everyone is so happy. They all probably have their futures planned out for the next thirty years while I don't even know where to begin. I got accepted into several community colleges but the one college I actually wanted to get in denied my entry. So now I'm stuck at home for a while.
"Mom, I'm going to take a walk," I say leaning into my mom.
"Okay sweetie, don't take too long."
I nod and skip down the bleachers with my yearbook in hand. As I made my way toward the front of my high school, a group of girls beckoned me.
"(Y/N), (Y/N)! Come here!" they shouted while one of them held a camera. Do these girls really want me in their picture? I don't really remember talking to them since freshman year but one picture is better than none. My smile went wide as I ran over to them.
To my dismay, the girl only handed me the camera and asked, " Can you take this picture of my friends and I? Thanks so much!"
I tried to keep the frown from appearing on my face but I couldn't help it. I snapped the picture for the group and handed off the camera.
I ran off before they could tell me it turned out blurry or one of them looked fat. Tears began to form in my eyes and I just wanted to crawl under a rock. I turned the corner but before I could let out a sob, someone bumped into me. I fell to the ground and straight onto my bum.
"Oh, oh my, I'm so sorry, let me help you up," a boy said.
His hand latched onto mine as he helped me to my feet. I bit my lip to keep my tears from flowing over. Oh my goodness, this is the guy I've had my eyes on ever since he came to this school. Now I really need to keep my tears in. He was a transfer student from somewhere else in England and of course, I never had the nerve to talk to him or find out his name. So I always admired from a distance. Honestly, you learn so much more about a person just by watching them. I'm not a creep, I promise.
"Hi," we said at the same time as we stared into each others eyes and giggled. His laugh is so great to listen to, like music is being inserted to my soul. His beautiful brown eyes are piercing needles into my heart but I don't want to leave his side.
"I don't believe we've ever met before, I'm Liam. You're Jake's sister right?" he asks.
My mouth isn't working with all of the thoughts swimming in my head and all I can do is nod and smile at him. I'm refrainning from drooling all over myself. He laughs again and I'm brought back to Earth.
"Um, yeah I am. My name's (Y/N) and I should watch where I'm going more often," I blurted. Can I sound any dorkier? I could only palm my forehead in embarrassment but he was still smirking at me.
"Liam, let's go mate, party's in ten!" other boys shouted behind us. I looked down to my feet in sadness. I don't want Liam to leave.
"Well, I've gotta get going. I'll see you around, yeah?" he asked.
"I guess so," I whispered, not being able to look him in the eyes. I could hear his feet walk away from me. The tears were coming back up as I looked up to see the cutest boy in my life run off to some party. I shook my head at myself because I actually thought he would have a long conversation with me.
I turned around to go back to my mom at the bleachers. I only made it a few feet before I heard Liam behind me.
"(Y/N), (Y/N), wait up!" he shouted. I spun around to find him running after me. What, does he want to laugh at my thoughts or something?
"Can I sign your yearbook?" he asks while brushing his cute little quiff higher on his head. I smiled and handed him the yearbook to sign. He took out a blue pen to write a note for me in the empty pages of nonexistent memories. After thrity seconds of writing, he handed the book back to me and smiled.
"Before I go, I just wanted to give you this," and with that he kissed my cheek. I was completley thrown off by the gesture and I was extremely surprised that I hadn't melted into a puddle. With one last smile, he ran back off to his friends.
I quickly flipped to the first page to find his note.
"(Y/N), You are probably the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. I couldn't just walk away without telling you. Please, please call me soon. Yours truly, Liam," and underneath was a ten digit cell phone number. Maybe I won't feel so lonely this summer.
