The ear-piercing sound of my alarm clock woke me up in an instant.I groggily sat up and reached across my bedside table to turn it off. I swung my feet off the bed and my feet searched the ground for my warm, fluffy slippers. I stood up and walked over to my closet. I opened the doors and looked through my clothes trying to decide what to wear. I finally settled on a emerald halter that complements my eyes, skinny jeans, and a pair of wedges. I quickly applied a coat of strawberry lip gloss, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and rushed down stairs. As I entered the kitchen I noticed a note on the stainless steel fridge.

Dear Amber,

Sorry sweetie. I had a meeting today. There's orange juice in the fridge and bread in the pantry so you can make toast. Please get Josh ready for school. Love you lots.

Mom

"Josh", I hollered upstairs "Stop playing your silly video games and get downstairs."

I heard a heavy sigh and a loud bang as Josh slammed his door. He's coming. I grabbed the orange juice out of the fridge and poured two glasses.

"Hey Amber.", my brother said.

"Hey buddy.", I said ruffling his hair.

"You do that again and I slap those freckles right off your face." I stepped back surprised that he just threatened me. I put my hands on my hips and gave him my best "shame on you" face.

"You just earned yourself toaster duty."

"But I'm too young, you're 16 and I'm 10.", he whined. I didn't reply I just pointed towards the toaster. Josh slumped his shoulders and trudged towards the metal monster (in his opinion). Five minutes later I heard the loud ding of the toaster. I grabbed two plastic plates out of the cabinet and I carefully got the golden brown masterpiece safely out of the toaster.

"Here Josh.", I said handing him the plate. I glanced up at the clock and was surprised to see it was 8:20.

"We need to go!", I shouted. I quickly ate my toast and drank my orange juice in two large gulps. I handed Josh his backpack and grabbed mine. I opened the door for Josh and ran down the driveway.

"Bye Josh!", I hollered to him. After sprinting to the bus stop I looked down the street, I could see the bus coming. Right on time

I got off the bus as fast as I could. After ten minutes of spitballs and screaming I was glad when we arrived at Roseland High School. I ran my fingers through my hair searching for any remains of silly string. I glanced down at my watch, 8:50 I have time to lose. So I sat down on the bench and started to read.

The first bell rang, Oh no! I only have 5 minutes to get to homeroom! I shoved my book in my backpack and started running through the school.

I scurried into homeroom as the second bell rang. I slammed the door behind me knocking the motivational poster off the wall. I tip-toed to the back of the room hoping no one would notice me (if the slam of the door didn't all ready do that) I pulled out my checkered notebook and started to draw. Someone knocked on the door interrupting my doodling.

"Come in Mr. Smith", Mr. Santiago yelled. I tucked my auburn hair behind my ear and glanced up to see the visitor.

I heard an almost silent creak as he pushed open the large wooden door. As he walked into the room he tripped over the poster on the floor. His sun-kissed skin turned a dark shade of red as he picked himself off the tile floor. He stared down at his shoes and started to have a thumb war against himself while Mr. Santiago began to give the "new kid" speech.

"I would like everyone to give a warm welcome to Matthew Smith.", he said. The classroom was dead silent besides occasional snoring. Mr. Santiago coughed which we interpreted as "You better start talking or you all are in big trouble." A chorus of hello broke out from the classroom.

"Matt you'll be sitting next to Amber, and Amber why don't you show Mr. Smith around." Mr. Santiago said with no hesitation. Oh no what if I embarrass myself! I started to think of different ways of embarrassing myself and how I can avoid doing any of them. Suddenly I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. When I turned I was face to face with Matt.

"Hi I'm Matt Smith.", he said as he shook his dirty blonde hair out of his crystal blue eyes.

"I'm Amber Williams."

After forty-five minutes of listening to the history of the U.S.A it was a relief when the bell finally rang. I slung my backpack over my shoulder and ran out of the classroom towards my locker. I quickly entered my combination 0.5.6.1 but it remained locked. I tried it again but I was unsuccessful. I hit my locker but all I got from that was a sore fist.

"Here let me help you.", said someone behind me. I turned around and was surprised to find Matt. He put his hand on my shoulder and turned me slightly to the left of the locker. "This is my locker yours is over there.", he said. So much for not embarrassing myself, I started to feel my face turn hot.

"I'll just call the dent in my locker a decoration.", he said sarcastically. I giggled, happy that he took me hitting his locker as a joke and not me violating the Code of Conduct Rule 7 Destruction of  School Property.

"Hey I was wondering if you wanted to eat at Hamburger Heaven after school?", Matt said. Maybeit's a date!!!

"Of course! Meet you there at 4:00.", I said a little too excitedly. He nodded his head and waved goodbye. I sighed and leaned against my locker.

"4:00.", I whispered to myself.
