Cooks:
The cooks at St. Jude's are not cruel nor lazy as was previously implied. The truth is no one knows why they insist upon terrible food. Maybe they cook it the way they like it in the belief that the students share their taste. Maybe they wish to present themselves as an enemy to rally against; to force a sense of comradeship amongst tho use who suffer under them. This does not matter. The point is, the cooks in general were not cruel, so this is not a reason for the behavior of Nurse Klara Reverof.
The Reverof family:
They are known in the small town in Russia in which they reside as a romantic family of scholars and poets. Maybe a tad miserly, that that concludes the bad points of the family. They were glorified in many poems and songs composed by relatives as the family that knows. This implies an understanding, positive environment. Surely Klara has not picked up bad habits here?
Maybe she was bullied at school, or there is some other aspect of her upbringing that have escaped the notice of her psychologist. But the truth is some people just turn out like that.
