Prologue

Like always, a few steps away from my doorstep I couldn't find my keys. After rummaging in my bag for a while, I finally found them and opened the door. Finally, I’m home! I survived another day of high school!

I knew in a few minutes my roommate and best friend Emilie would come home. I’ve known her since I was a little girl, but she has graduated and I must survive high school all by myself. I searched for my phone. I couldn’t find this morning. Where could it be? I was still was searching for it when Emilie came home.

“Ooh Lexi, are you searching for you're phone? I'm very sorry. I took it because I couldn't find mine,” Emilie said. “Sorry Girl.”

“Oh. Doesn't matter,” I replied. “But if you ever want to use my phone again, can you tell me first? Then, I don't need to search hopelessly for my phone.”

“Yeah, of course.”

I dragged my laptop from my bag. I knew the last three months were over so they would be searching a new victim. When I logged onto my Facebook, I checked if they already had a new victim. They did and oh shit, it was me. I had hoped this day would never come. I scrolled down the page searching for the bet that was placed on me. I started to read it out loud so that Emilie would hear it:

“The bet - Get Lexi to fall in love with one of us (Jamez/Jazz/Randi/Brad). If we succeed she will do everything we ask. Then, we get her on stage for performing night and convince her to sing. She sings horribly. She will be so ashamed that she will change schools and then we eliminate another ugly girl. Time: 3 months”

I held my breath. How could they know I can't sing? They’ve never heard me sing before!

Either way, I knew that the three months that were coming would be a living hell. I hope I can survive this. I really don't want to change schools because the "Challenge" want me to leave. Being ugly doesn’t give them the right to hate me.

“I have an idea!” I screamed out loud. Emilie was staring at me with a worried and surprised face. “I'm going to get a makeover so maybe they won't want me to change school.”

“Lexi, you know they never change there bet,” Emilie said sadly. “They have like a golden rule for that: 'a bet is a bet'.”

I knew she was right, but the only thing I could do is try. I can't let them win. I will be the first girl to win their stupid game! I’m totally confident that I can survive this with my dignity!

I grabbed my key and Emilie's arm and dragged her to my car.

“Come on, we have to go to the mall!”

The make over wasn't easy. First things first, we went to get manicures. My nails look disgusting, so first we made those look like beautiful diamonds. When my manicure was done, we went to the hairdresser. Everything was going great, but can an ugly duck become a beautiful swan? I looked in the mirror to see my new haircut. My long brown hair looked so beautiful and the make-up that Emilie had put on me looked amazing. I dumped my glasses because I didn't really need them anymore. I just kept wearing them because I liked them. I smiled at Emilie. The last step is coming now: buying some new clothes. When we got to the mall I looked at all the clothes there were.

This will cost so much money, but it will hopefully be worth it. I bought a beautiful dress and a red jacket that fitted my hips very well. I also bought some shoes, bracelets, and a necklace. This would be my outfit for tomorrow.

When I was done shopping I needed to test my new look. We walked towards some guys standing besides the ice cream cart, and they whistled towards us. It worked!

“Lexi, I need to use the girls toilet. I will meet you at the car,” Emilie said before hurrying off.

“Ok Emilie. See you within 20 minutes,” I called after her.

I bought an ice cream and sat down on a little bench. Then I saw them. The "Challenge" was coming toward me. Did they recognize me? Did my plan fail? They stopped a few steps away.

“Hello beauty, do we know you? You look kind of familiar and you were staring so we decided to come over and say hello,” Jamez said smoothly.

Many crazy thoughts ran across my mind. What do I need to say? Will they recognize me if I speak? I can't reach Emilie for help. What do I need to do? After a long silence I finally got something out of my throat.

“We go to school together,” I said meekly. They looked surprised.

“That can't be,” he replied. “We know every girl that goes to school with us. Even the ugly ones.”

“Like Lexi,” coughed Brad.

Now I was furious. First, I was called beautiful, but then I was called ugly. I knew they didn't recognize me as Lexi, but I just couldn't hold it in anymore. I was just so furious.

“I am Lexi! I want you guys to know that I will win the bet!” I screamed at them. The four boys were shocked, but after a minute they started to laugh.

"You’re only making the bet that we made more attractive now that you're hot and all. We will have so much fun getting you to fall in love with one of us. It’s kind of sad that you're going to leave our school, but the golden rule stands: 'a bet is a bet'. But thanks dear, for make this bet amazing for us. We will enjoy every second of it,”Randi said.

They walked away, letting me stand there in silence. I was totally speechless. What had I done? I just made me a toy for them. I knew that it would get even harder now to win this bet. So my plan failed? What do I need to do now? Maybe I better just give up. And let them win? It would save me a lot of trouble. No! I was determined to win that bet no matter what it took!
