I have to get to the waffle house. I can't miss this window of opportunity. When the last solar eclipse had happened, back in 2017, I was in this same waffle house. I didn't think much of it then. Oh what a fool I was. I had gone in for a quick lunch, not to interested in the impending cosmic event. I was paying my bill when totality hit. My waitress' gaze turned toward the sky.

"It's happening" She said, her eyes as black as night. Suddenly, all was dark. The outside air was cool and smelt of dew. The sky pink, like an eternal sunset. Directly above us was the ring of totality, the moon placed perfectly in front of the sun. I looked upon it, and suddenly i was gone.

I've been living my life in this strange world for the past 7 years. Mostly camping and hiding, and waiting. But now. Now is my chance to get back to my home. I'm not sure yet what i'll tell my family and friends, to whom I've been missing all these years. I have no way to explain my disappearance to them, or to anyone.

That doesn't matter though. What matters is that I cross this parking lot to the waffle house. I look up, the sun is but a crescent. Totality is imminent. I run to the door of the abandoned building, praying for it to be open. I cross the threshold and look up. The moon has swallowed the sun.
