Present time

Grabbing my back pack and my water bottle I make my way out of my small apartment and towards the elevator. Today was my second last day serving my 100 hours at the Westbourne Care Home and I was beyond excited. I was going to miss all the staff there as I grew so close to them over the past weeks but I wanted to try and pursue the job I’ve been longing to do since I was a child.

These past few months have been slow but somewhat enjoying. I thought I would’ve had time to find a job while working at the nursing home, but since it was flu season, most of the employees were ill and they decided to call me to fill in their shifts. So all up, I have done 20 extra hours, all unpaid. At first it annoyed me as I was a 22 year old with no job and all I had going for me was an unpaid employment. But the staff took pity on me and paid me a wage that was enough to live off.

Pushing the down button the doors open almost immediately and a little girl skips out. I look after her surprised as I step into the elevator. The doors close and my view of the small girl disappears.

What kind of parents let their child ride an elevator alone?

Stepping out of the lobby I quickly dismiss the thought and hug my jacket to my body closer as the cold morning air of Holmes chapel hit my skin. Shivering, I hop into my car and turn the heating up high. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes I back out of the lot and drive along the road, humming to the radio and bopping my head to the beat.

"Morning Macey." Rochelle greets me kindly behind the reception desk as I walk into the elderly home. She was a kind old woman who never once thought a negative thought and that’s what I liked the most about her. I smile warmly at her as I take my jacket off, the heat inside the building warming me up.

"Good morning Rochelle." I make my way around the large reception desk and place my things onto my desk.

"Alright kiddo, mind taking over for a bit? I believe it’s my break." She smiles as she grabs her coffee mug off the table. Bags are visible underneath her eyes from lack of sleep and I immediately know she has been here since the early hours of the morning.

"Of course." I reply, taking her place and logging out of her computer account and into mine.

"Thank you deary, I'll be back in 20!" she calls over her shoulder exiting the room. I smile to myself and type in my username and password. As I wait patiently for the computer to load someone swiftly walks in and past the desk. I quickly look up to see a tall boy dressed in all black, walking quickly down the hallway. I roll my eyes and huff, quickly getting out of my seat and fast walking out of the room to catch up to the stupid boy.

Doesn’t he know that he needs to sign in?

“Obviously not.” I mutter to myself as I hurry to catch up to him.

"Excuse me!" I call down the hallway expecting him to stop but instead he keeps on walking, ignoring me. I groan and begin to pick up speed to match his fast pace.

"You forgot to sign in." I call after him. This time he stops and turns around to face me.I sigh in relief and slow down walking up to him closer and realise he is around my age.

He looks to be in a hurry as his curly dark brown hair is messy and his black shirt is crinkled showing signs that he didn't have enough time to ion it. His emerald eyes glare down at me as he looks at me annoyed.

"What?" he snaps as if he didn't hear anything I just said. I dismiss the sharp tone of his voice and speak again.

"I said you have to sign in." I say trying to catch my breath. That was the most exercise I've done in a while.

"I've been here a shit load of time and never have I had to sign in." he steps closer to me, and I instantly take a step back. His eyes narrow down at me and I feel like snapping at him for speaking so rudely to me. Although I know if I speak rudely to a visitor, I would surely get in trouble by Clarry, the person in charge.

Kindness is the key

Kindness is the key

I repeat to myself as I muster up a kind smile and look back to the stranger.

"I'm sorry but you must be mistaken, we always ensure that every visitor si--"

"Bloody hell why the fuck do I need to sign in" he interrupts harshly as he crosses his arms looking at me. He looks very intimidating as black tattoos adorn his muscular arm. I gulp.

"It's a way to keep track of who has seen each patient and--"

"Why does that matter" he frustrated says as he tugs at his hair.

"Look, I didn't make these rules up but I'm sorry, you have to sign in." I say through gritted teeth.

"Nope." I raise my eyebrows at the annoying boy as he smirks. I feel anger rise in me as I cross my arms as well.

Kindness isn't the fucking key with this guy!

"No?" I repeat.

He leans in closer and I feel his breath fanning my face. I'm about to back away when he whispers in my ear.

"No." I push him away and glare at him. Screw trying to be kind to him. If he wants to be rude, so be it.

"Just sign the damn book, it's simple and if you would've done it already, you would be where you need to be." I clench my fists from the sudden urge to punch the boy in the face as he shakes his head.

"Bye Macey". He says as he turns around and walks back down the corridor. I feel my eyes widening and my mouth falling agape. Realising, I look down at my shirt and huff in annoyance.

"Stupid name badge." I mutter. Great, now the idiot knows my name. Quickly looking up I groan, releasing I have let him go. Deciding to just go and look for him, I choose not to as the asshole could be roaming around anywhere in the big builiding. As I walk back to my desk and sit down to my awaiting computer, a thought crosses my mind.

He didn't even sign the damn book
