With shaking hands, I reached for the TV remote. The message I had received from my aunt was enough to make my eyes well up.
"Casey, please turn on the TV, there has been an accident at the hotel your parents are staying at..."
It was my parents' 10 year anniversary and I had encouraged them to go and celebrate, they were hesitant at first but I ensured them I would be fine staying home alone. I braced myself for the news story I was about to hear after the commercial. I was consumed by guilt, if anything happened to them, it would be my fault. How would I ever live with myself?
"There has been a bombing at Lakewood Hotel, Pennsylvania at 6:52 pm. 132 fatalities have been recorded and 6 people were severely injured. We believe..."
I turned the TV off and with tears running down my cheeks I called 911. My voice was inaudible, after explaining my situation three times, someone was finally sent to pick me up and bring me to the hospital where I learned my Mum had passed away.
