'Ring, ring!'
A bell attached to the door of the coffee shop rang, it's sharp noise making my ears buzz . It was a cosy little shop, always busy and serving customers. The shop was small, barely squeezing 10 chairs into the limited amount of space, but that was what I liked about it - it never seemed empty and even with a low amount of customers it was always bustling with life.
We had chosen the perfect time to come, only a couple with a toddler occupied a small booth at the back of the shop. As we walked through the door a waitress carrying a tray of empty cups and plates over to the counter smiled at us. The smell of coffee and pastries washed over me as I walked up to the counter with Asa closely behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see him reading the menu written on massive chalk boards hanging off the wall.
"Hiya, what can I get you?" The waitress asked us after putting the tray down. I looked back at Asa and he shrugged, obviously not knowing what to have.
"Ummm... Two salted caramel mochas please." I replied hastily, not wanting to change my mind.
"Thats £4 altogether. Anything else?" She said, punching numbers into the till in front of her. I shook my head and handed her a five pound note. After receiving £1 change I walked over to an empty table right by a window to wait for our drinks to be made. I sat down in the chair nearest the door and shrugged my rain soaked coat off and onto the back of the chair. I then flicked my long, damp hair over my shoulders which had turned a darker shade of brown from the rain and had started to become wavy, returning to it's natural form.
"You didn't have to pay for me, Favel... I think you are more than aware that I can afford it." Asa started, looking up from the table. "Thanks, though." He added with a slight smile.
"No, its fine. Don't mention it..." I said. Feeling my cheeks getting warmer I looked away out of the window to try and hide the slight blush forming. In the reflection of the window I saw the waitress walking toward our table carrying two steaming hot drinks on a tray. They smelled like heaven as she placed them down on the table in front of us. I thanked her and grabbed my drink with both hands. Holding it up to my nose, I inhaled deeply and a mouth watering scent of coffee, chocolate and caramel filled me up. I looked up over my cup and saw Asa watching me.
"What...?" I asked suspiciously. In a smooth sweep, Asa's hand moved over to my face and I felt his cold hand on my cheek. There was no escaping it now, I was definitely blushing again. My eyes locked onto his entrancing blue eyes and it was as if everything had stopped around me, as if it was just us two, locked in that precious few seconds that seemed to last hours.
'Ding dinngg'
The sound of a text coming through to my phone broke the trance-like moment as if someone had thrown cold water over us. Asa brushed my cheek quickly and looked down. I wasn't sure if it was just my eyes playing tricks on me but I was sure he was also blushing slightly.
"Sorry... You had a strand of your hair stuck to your cheek from the rain." He said, coughing a little.
"Oh..." I murmured, embarrassed. I got my phone out of my pocket and read the new text.
'R is sleeping round her friend's house tonite so gunna stay out. Dad out too. U will be home alone so lock doors. Lyl, Mum xxx'
I sighed and put my phone down on the table.
"What's up?" Asa asked.
"Oh, nothing. My mum just text to say I'd be home alone tonight." I answered, flashing him the text.
"Who's R?" He inquired, looking at the message.
"It's short for Rhiannon. She's my 11 year old sister." I reply, rolling my eyes.
"You don't get on then, by the looks of things..." Asa laughed. I shook my head smiling. I loved my sister but she could be a pain in the arse sometimes. Asa picked up his drink which had cooled down and took a sip. His eyes widened when he swallowed.
"Jessussss that's amazing..." He murmured, referring to the rich liquid he held in his hands.
"I know, that's 'cause I chose it!" I grinned. While Asa finished his drink I turned my phone back on to check my facebook messages. Just as I had unlocked it the screen went black and the unwelcome sign of 'out of charge' flashed up on my iPhone. I cursed under my breath and put my phone back in my pocket.
"My phone just died so I'm pretty much done for if my mum changes her plans and tries to call or text me." I explain to Asa.
"Wait, let me check my battery actually..." Asa replied uncertainly. "Oh shit!"
"Whats wrong Asa?"
"I have three missed calls from my mum... Oh god, she's going to kill me. Do you mind if i quickly call her back...?" He requested. I shook my head and watched him redial the number and put the phone to his ear. A minute later he put the phone down on the table after hanging up.
"Looks like you're not the only one being left home alone. My sister is with my cousin at a baby sitter's house and my mum and auntie have decided to stay out. You wouldn't happen to know where the leisure centre in Woodley is would you?" He queried.
"Yeah, I live on the road right outside it... why?" I replied, puzzled.
"Well, you're going to love this then. My auntie lives in what used to be the caretaker's house right outside..."
"Oh shut up. You're kidding me, right?! The bungalow?" I questioned.
"That's the one. Do you think you could take me there? Like I said, I don't know my way around Woodley - I'm new." He responded.
"I have to go that way anyway, so sure." I look up at the clock on the wall. "It's just coming up for 6:50pm so there should be a bus in about 10 minutes. We need to go now to get there though..." I suggested.
"Let's go then." Asa said, standing up and walking towards to door. As we stepped out into the nasty English weather, Asa grabbed my hand and entwined his fingers through mine. As I glanced at him in surprise he shot me a smile and together, hand in hand, we started walking through the wind and rain to the bus stop.
