It had been three hours since you had woken up and all you had managed to do was move to the living room and turn on the TV. Yeah, mom had told you to go do some homework, but what was a few hours of your morning spent happily de-stressing and waking up?

After a few episodes of the show you were currently watching, you got bored and surfed around looking for movies. Coraline...Moana...The Matrix...

All great, but not enough to catch my interest. You sighed to yourself and looked disdainfully over to your homework sitting on the table by the couch.

Maybe.

You decided to search for more distractions before you did any more homework. There wasn't much more left, anyway, and you could do it all last minute if you really felt like it. It was only for English and History, two easier subjects, and both of those teachers already liked you.

You smiled to yourself as you got up and walked toward the kitchen. Food is always one of the best tools for procrastination, in your experience, and it gave you more energy to get more work done.

At least, that's what you told yourself.

To your delight, your dad had gone grocery shopping recently, and there was a fresh stock of ice cream in the freezer. You nearly laughed out loud when you took the whole carton, grabbed a spoon, and walked back over to the couch. You neglected to remember, however, that you had a dilemma with choosing what to watch.

Suddenly, you had a thought.

You pulled your laptop onto the couch next to you and, while waiting for it to log you in, went and got your earbuds from your bag. You jogged back to the couch and opened YouTube, then managed to find an audio of the chapter of the English book you were reading. You plugged your earbuds in and put them on, grabbed your ice cream, and sat back to revel in your genius compromise.

Your volume was low enough that you could still hear most of what was going on around you, but nothing that was super quiet. You also weren't paying attention to anything around you, opting instead to look at the art that accompanied the audiobook.

Your ignorance was how you managed to miss the over-pale face in the window, staring right at you like he wanted your attention. He ducked down after a minute, apparently satisfied with your unresponsiveness, and left you to your work.

It was a few hours of listening to audios and watching videos before you even looked at the clock again. 12:00 stared back at you, and you stared down at your empty pint of ice cream.

Oh well. Noon means lunch, yeah? And I'm actually hungry, now, a pint isn't that much.

You went to the kitchen and started making yourself a bowl of ramen. You'd just managed to get the water to a boil when you heard your phone buzz. It was a text from your dad.

Hey, sweetie! Just checking in and making sure you haven't been executed by the mafia, LOL. Mom told me what happened. Sorry I wasn't there this morning, work called me in early. Have you eaten?

You smiled at your dad's worry. He worked a lot, sure, but he loved you and he made sure you knew it. You texted him back after you put the block of ramen in the bowl.

Yeah, dad, I'm making lunch now. Don't worry, I'm very alive. See you when you get home :)

Your ramen was done within minutes, and you smiled at the convenience of the food. You went back to the couch and put your earbuds back in, listening to more of your English book.

Maybe I'll bore myself into wanting to watch more TV. Plus, any progress in all of this homework is good.

You turned the volume up a bit, sat back, watched, and listened. You failed to notice the clicking noises coming from your front door, as well as the door opening and the quiet tread of a man entering. He slipped into your basement quietly, and you were none the wiser.
