8 YEARS LATER

"Got you." I said, my eyes filled with determination.

"No you didn't!" Loxy said as she pulled out a rare Egyptian card that had the ability to knockout any of the opponent's cards. 

"Checkmate!" I pulled out three counter cards to the Egyptian card and reversed the knockout effect to her. "I knew you were going to pull out your trump card, so I secretly had these counter cards to counter your Egyptian card and your remaining cards."

"Aww man! You beat me again! You truly are the child prodigy of the card gaming industry." Loxy said as she walked away in defeat. "While we're here, have you heard of virtual card gaming? They've just released it a month ago."

"Really?! I've never heard of it." I said.

"Well, you should go and try it, people say it's hard and that people are on a whole other level there. You're already the child prodigy of the card gaming industry, why not become a child prodigy of the virtual one?"

"Yeah, I'll go try it when I get the chance."

"Alright, see ya later."


Hmm... I thought as I was walking home. Virtual card gaming huh? Sounds interesting.

"Hey you!" a voice said, popping out of nowhere.

"Huh?" I yelped in surprise. I was sure there was nobody around him.

"I saw you battling Loxy, the champion of the WCGI (Women's Card Gaming Industry), and you really had her. Now I want to challenge you! But not here, not in this world. We'll fight in the VCG world."

"VCG? What's that?"

"Aww come on, prodigy of the Sodaina Tatakai! You don't know what VCG is? It's Virtual Card Gaming! The one that got released a month ago. I'm sure Loxy told you, I heard your conversation with her."

"Wait, what? You heard our conversation?"

"Never mind that, follow me."

Come to think of it, he hasn't told me his name. That's kinda rude but I guess I'll just figure out when we fight.


I followed the mysterious card player over to what appeared to be a warehouse. In the warehouse were many machines that had helmets connected to it. It looked like a pretty sketchy place to me, but I really wanted to try this out so I put that thought on the back of my mind. The mysterious card player put me down on a machine, and to my surprise, the machine I was on felt quite comfortable. After a couple of long, unsettling minutes, the mysterious card player hooked up some suction cups and wires all over my body and when he was done, he asked me if I was ready and put the helmet on. Nothing happened at first but then I saw a flash of light. It blinded me and I couldn't see anything for a while, but when my vision cleared up I found myself in a sci-fi looking city with floating cars zooming past me. I was so shocked! Everything looked so amazing! I never thought it was would be this good and detailed.

"Wow! This is amazing! I'm going to-- AHHH!!" I screamed as a bot suddenly came up to me and teleported me to a dark room.

"Aww man! Where's the awesome city?!" I complained, dreading to go back and see the city again.

"Welcome to Sodaina Tatakai! - VCG." A bot said. "In this game, your cards come to life, and you fight them for real. Instead of playing with old, flimsy paper cards, you get to see their true power. Please note that you can still feel pain in this game, and you can still die from this game so please take this game seriously."

"Woah, that's some attention to detail." I said as I was teleported to a room that appeared to be a sparring room.

"This room will be your practice room. In here, you fight bots and not actual people, but you can invite a person in to battle, but the battle wont be official and wont be in the records. All battles made outside of this building are considered official and is automatically put into our records. That way, if you're fighting somebody to kill them or plan to do any other crime like that, we'll know immediately."

"Now that makes me feel unsafe." I said as I was teleported to another room that appeared to be a dormitory. 

"Here is where you will rest and do other things you would normally do in real life. The game time here corresponds to the time in real life, so be wary about how much time you spend here. This place is a no-fight zone, so you cannot fight in your dormitory. We understand that there are hackers coming into this game and bypassing the no-fighting system, and we are working on those hackers. But if you see somebody that is a potential hacker, please let us know and we'll look after the suspected hacker. If you report a hacker, you do get a $100,000 reward or more both here and there. We will not tolerate these hackers. The reason that all dormitories are no-fight zones is because you could invite the wrong person in here, and if they were to force you to battle them with the intent to kill, you're done both here and there. The only way to get people into your dormitory is if you invite them. So please, be careful about who you trust. You could end up trusting the wrong person, and we don't want that happening right now after only a month of this game's release."

"Okay, got it." I said. "I'll make sure to be careful about who I trust." In reality, I was actually kind of terrified at the fact that people can actually kill you in this game.

"If you need any help or assistance, you can notify us by going to your menu and clicking "Help."

"How do I go to my menu?" I asked, even though I thought it was kinda weird talking to a bot.

"The way to have access to the menu is you face the palm of your hand upwards-- as if you were holding an energy ball."

"Alright, let's try this". I put the palm of my hand out and pointed it upwards. The menu popped up right before my hands.

"To remove the menu, swipe your hand to the side."

I tried that too, and the menu swiped away. "Aww this is so cool!" I said. I just had to say that. This world was so cool! Everything looked and felt real. I've experienced VR before, and that was awesome but VCG was on a whole other level. 

"We will now commence the last step of the tutorial, fighting your first card battle."

"Wait what?! What about my cards? Do I even have any?"

"Summon the menu, and one of the options should be "Cards". Click on that and you will see your cards. You can only have a maximum of 70 cards, and you cannot have more than 7 of the same card."

I summoned the menu and clicked "Cards". Sure enough, there were my cards, but they weren't that good. I guess I'm just gonna have to start from scratch. I thought.

After I swiped my menu off, I was immediately teleported to an arena that looked like something gladiators would fight in. On the opposite side of the arena, I saw what looked like a girl with pink hair and dark skin. I recognized her for some reason.. 

"Ladies and gentleman! This is a special battle! This is the child prodigy himself fighting his first duel in VCG! Will he be defeated? Or will he take the throne?" A really annoyingly loud narrator said. "The battle is about to begin! Countdown!"

After he said "Countdown!", the whole arena was shaking and everybody was counting down.

"10, 9 , 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!!!!!!"

"Wait!--" I yelled.

"DUEL!!!!!!"
