Chapter One~
Hermione smiled contentedly as she rested against the window of the Hogwarts Express. The lazy autumn sunshine filled the carriage she and Ginny were riding in as the train burst from the tunnel.
"We're almost there!" Ginny exclaimed, "I'm so happy you decided to return with me. It would've been dreadful facing this year alone."
"It's so strange to be coming back after the war," Hermione mused, "but there is no way I would've rejected an opportunity to finish my last year at Hogwarts! Harry and Ron are insane." Ginny laughed and nodded her head in agreement.
"I'm really going to miss Harry," Ginny though aloud. She stopped, but then quickly added, "I can't say I'm going to miss Ronald though!" They both chuckled and Hermione agreed, "I understand what you mean. I'll miss them both, but I'm sort of glad they aren't here. Things with Ron might've been a bit awkward.." Ginny nodded, understanding exactly what she meant.
Harry and Ron had chosen to take jobs as Aurors as soon as the war had concluded, so being given the choice to return to Hogwarts for the last year they never finished was not as exciting as it was to Hermione. Of course, it didn't hurt that Headmistress MacGonagall had offered her the position of Head Girl. There was no way she could've turned down the brilliant opportunity. Before Hermione and Ginny had left for Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione agreed that their love wasn't really the romantic kind. It was more like a brother/sister relationship. So they 'broke up' and parted ways.
Ginny opened her mouth to reply, but was cut off by a curt knock on the compartment door. Hermione's warm eyes snapped up only to meet a pair of frozen blue ones staring- no, glaring- straight at her. Her happy smile immediately melted off her face as she wondered why Draco Malfoy, of all people, had to be returning to Hogwarts. His pale hands slid the door open smoothly and stepped in, sliding it shut again without missing a beat.
"Granger," he inclined his head toward her, his infamous smirk becoming prominent on his pale face. Then he turned slightly and offered the same motion to Ginny, "Weaselette. Pleasure."
"Piss off, Malfoy," Ginny spat. Mock surprise replaced his face.
"Such a feisty little girl," he chuckled to himself, turning once again to Hermione, "Might want to watch this one." Draco winked, earning a solid kick to the knee from the fiery redhead. He grunted as the knee gave out, catching himself by grabbing the overhead railing. Hermione snorted and quickly covered her mouth when Ginny shot a glare in her direction.
"Now, now," Draco straightened himself, officially annoyed, "there was no need for that." Hermione raised an eyebrow at him, wondering how he thought Ginny was going to react. In her opinion, he was lucky Ginny only kicked him in the knee.
She cleared her throat, instantly drawing attention to herself. Her cheeks growing warm, she looked at Draco, and spoke- a bit more boldly than she meant to sound,
"If you're quite done making smart remarks, would you care to inform us as to why you're here?" The blond smirked again and teased,
"What? Are you not enjoying my presence?" Ginny raised her foot again threateningly and Draco backed against the door, not eager to let the girl use it against him once more. He had a feeling that she wouldn't be aiming for his knee again.
