Mama once told me count your rainbows. Count them Jamie. Shed whispered.
They will shine brightly when its time. They will lead you to your pot of gold
Pot of gold? Id ask. Yes shed reply. A bright pot of gold. waiting just for you.
But until then, count them. Memorize them, relish them.
So I did. I counted them and memorized all the bright and beautiful colors.
I counted them when it rained. I counted them when the sun was out.
I counted them when it snowed. I counted them when the tornado destroyed our house
I counted them when the boys pushed me in a river. I even counted them when Bow died.
I listened to mama tell me the secrets of the colors.
Blue she says, will help you be a calm, intelligent and loyal boy.
Red shed laugh. Well this one is the prideful one of them all. It will be the downfall of you if you dont use it wisely. It ignites the fire in you.
Now yellow. Shed smile. It is the best one out there. It helps you live a long and happy life.
Aww green. You see green helps you grow into a healthy and strong boy.
Orange is a good one. She said, it is a combination of red and yellow. It balances them out.
Violet she said. Helps you understand the mystery of this world. It gives you power.
And indigo. Itll help you be calm and use your power for good.
Remember them. Understand them. Know them Jamie for they are your lifeline.
I counted them faithfully each day. Until one day the faith died within me when she left.
My mother was my rainbow. After she left there was no more rainbows to count and I never reached the pot of gold.
