"That's it," Lauren declares, jumping down from her bed. She grabs my arms and drags me off the futon and towards our closet. "Quit your moping. We're going out tonight."

I groan. "Lo, I'm really not in the mood."

"Which is exactly why it's necessary."

I throw on a pair of leggings and a cute top before fixing up my hair and makeup. Hailey hands me a strong mixed drink, and once I finish, we're locking up our dorm and heading towards the lobby. We decide to walk to the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity house, having heard there was a party tonight.

When we arrive, the place is packed. There are bodies wedged into every opening and crevice, and it's tough pushing through the crowd together. We spot a few of our friends by the couches and make our way over. Lydia and Hailey make quick conversation while I slink in between two guys on the couch.

"You feelin' alright?" one of the guys, Connor, asks. "You don't look so good."

"Yeah," I say with a sigh. "It's just been a rough night."

"Here, maybe this will make it better." He hands me his solo cup and I take a sip. Warm beer. Typical.

He starts asking me about my plans before the upcoming football game, but instead of listening, my eyes scan the crowd. When they fall on Maverick on the opposite side of the room, I chug the rest of the beer and interrupt Connor. "Do you wanna take shots?"

He begins to laugh at my abruptness, but he grabs my hand and leads me to the kitchen nonetheless. He pulls a fifth of tequila out of a side cabinet and finds two of the cleanest shot glasses he can get ahold of. I dig through the pantry until I find some salt and lime wedges—leave it to a frat house to have limes and salt instead of milk and bread.

We link our arms together and down the shots in unison. I shake my head to get the bitter taste from my lips, and take a swig from a new can of beer. In the meantime, Connor refills the shot glasses to the rim. After finishing the second shot, I feel the full effect of the liquor. There's a sway in my step, and Connor swoops in to lead me back to the couch.

"There you are," Hailey says, clearly annoyed that I slinked away without giving them a heads up.

"Sorry, baby girl," I mumble, falling into her as I attempt to give her a hug.

"Alright, girlfriend. You're sloppy drunk now, and you're officially cut off."

Hailey drops me on the couch next to Connor, and he starts rambling about his Bio professor. He suddenly points to a tall boy with messy brunette hair and pale blue eyes. "That kid's my lab partner, actually. Let me introduce you."

I'm too stunned to say anything, so I allow Connor to drag me over to the shy boy sipping from a bottle of water. "Maverick," he begins. "This is my friend Becca."

He looks at me confusedly, and I chug the rest of my beer while he says, "I live down the hall from her. We've met before."

"Small world, huh?" Connor says with a laugh. "Anyone want me to grab them anything to drink?"

"I'll take a coke and rum," I mumble. "If you have it."

Connor nods and heads towards the kitchen as Maverick smirks. "Coke and rum must be your go to drink."

"Oh, so now you're talking to me?"

"Bec, about that..."

"You regret it," I bravely say. "I heard."

He looks annoyed and rolls his eyes. "Becca, we don't even know each other. The most we've said to one another was 'hey' as we passed in the hallway."

"Well, you could have at least said hello."

"You know what?" Maverick asks with a laugh as he moves to lean against the wall. "I never realized how much I saw you around campus until I was purposely looking out for you."

"You were looking for me?"

"To avoid you," he snickers.

"Right." I roll my eyes and cross my arms.

Just then, Connor returns with my drink. "Hey, some of the guys need my help with the keg. I'll catch you guys later."

"See ya, man," Maverick says, giving him a half hug. Connor waves and disappears behind the flood of people, once again leaving me alone with Maverick.

"Well, I should get back to my friends," I murmur, sipping my drink.

"Becca, wait." Maverick runs a hand through his hair and sighs in frustration. "I just sort of feel like I took advantage of you. You were really drunk, and I was completely sober."

"Maverick..."

"It's whatever." His cheeks are tinted pink, and I can tell he feels embarrassed.

"Maverick, that's really sweet. But you really don't have to feel bad. I was having fun, and I definitely don't feel taken advantage of." I take a small swig from my drink and start to feel a little dizzy. "Besides, just because you kiss someone doesn't mean you like them or have to get attached to them."

Maverick looks at me and cocks an eyebrow. "If that's true, then kiss me right now and prove it."

I think about this for a moment, and for the first time all night, I think of Cameron. I guess Lauren was right, this is really what I needed to get my mind off him. Earlier tonight, he said that he had kissed a few girls last week at the bachelor's party. Deep down, I knew he was lying. But what was worse: actually kissing those girls or lying about it to hurt me?

Either way, Maverick is here with me now and Cameron is mostly likely alone in his dorm moping around and drinking cheap beer.

So, to prove my point to Maverick, I lean in and kiss that smirking boy square on the mouth.
