"I'm Harry. Harry Styles."
My breath caught in my throat as the name hit my ears.
There could be another Harry Styles at this school with curly hair and green eyes, I thought, though I was just kidding myself. Of course there wasn't another Harry. He was one of a kind.
"Well, Mr. Styles," Ms. Jenkins paused, taking a deep breath. "Since this is the first day of school, I'll let you off with a warning. But just make sure this doesn't happen again. Go take a seat in the front row. I want to keep my eye on you." He gave a short salute and made his way down the row toward an empty seat.
"Is this seat taken?"
I looked up briefly and instantly looked back down as I spotted his warm smile. I shook my head. "Uh, no," I said quietly. "It isn't." I listened as he sat down, dropping his bag on the linoleum floor. I picked up my pencil and began sketching a cow to occupy myself as Ms. Jenkins went over rules and protocol for her class.
"--Wear your IDs at all times, no exceptions. If you don't have one, get a temp before you come in here." I nodded my head, absent mindedly playing with the lacy lanyard around my neck as I continued sketching. Suddenly I felt a warm puff of air on my cheek. I turned my head and then turned it down toward the paper again when I met eyes with him. Our noses almost touched!
"So, are you new here?" he asked, leaning toward me. His breath smelled minty and sweet, and it chilled my lungs as I breathed it in. "I don't think I've seen you around here before. But maybe if you showed me your face--" He stopped mid-sentence as I turned toward him, wiping my ashy blonde hair out of my eyes. I batted my lightly mascara-d eyelids at him and raised my trimmed eyebrows. I bit back a smirk as his mouth formed a perfect 'o'.
"Eve--" he swallowed hard. "Evelyn? What happened to you?" I looked down and up my body.
A pair of light wash skinny jeans and a flowy white tank top; a pair of white flats slipped over my feet. My long blonde hair was wavy down my back and shoulders. My skin was not its usual tan self, in fact, it was paler than it had ever been. That's what I got for staying inside all summer.
"I've changed a bit," I said, a tone of flirtiness in my voice, while still being laced with acid. "How 'bout you, curls? You look the same as you did six months ago, except for that slut you have on your arm. How's that working for you?" He shrugged, the appalled look on his face quickly washing away.
"She's not a slut," he said, though not very enthusiastically. As if he was tired of telling people that. "She's nice to me and she's a great kisser." He gave me a wink and I turned back toward my cow, adding a few unnecessary lines to keep from responding. Otherwise I might have punched him.
My fist against his nose was an awful sight.
"But not as good as you were,"
What is air?
I slowly let my head turn toward him, hoping my ragged breathing wasn't noticeable.
It was noticeable.
Very.
"Miss, are you okay? You're face is red and you don't sound good. Do you want to go to the nurse?"
I looked up at Ms. Jenkins, and gave a short, quick nod. "Go along," she told me. I gathered my bag and notebook, and rushed to the door. As I turned the door handle, I glanced back at Harry, who had turned his head away toward the window.
"Is there something you need, sweetie?" I bit my lip, looking up at the pretty brunette nurse with big, doey eyes. She gave me a small smile. "Not feeling too well? You want to lie down?" I nodded.
She told me her name was Miss Janie and led me toward a small bed lined with thin paper. There was a soft looking pillow at the end, and I lied my head on it. It was really soft.
"Now you just hang tight while I get a clean thermometer," she said, patting my knee once before leaving the room. She came back within ten seconds, and told me to hold the thermometer in my mouth until it beeps.
Beep!
"Okay, let's see..." she plucked the instrument out of my mouth and peered down at the reading. "Oh my! 103.3! You need to get home and get some rest! If your fever gets any higher, you may have to get to a hospital. Let me get you some medicine, and then I'll call your mum or dad. I'll be right back."
She bustled out of the room, leaving me sitting up on the bed stunned. I felt fine when I woke up, but now that she metioned it, I was feeling extremely cold. I ran my hands over my bare arms, an attempt at warming myself.
At least Harry's out of my hair for the rest of the day, I said, laughing at the pun sort of statement.
And that's chapter two. Not too impressive I must say, but we're leading into the action. Next few chapters will be killer. XD
Vote/Comment/Fan if you enjoyed. Really, it makes my day. But even if you just read it, that's really nice.
Thanks!
