Ordinary People

Chapter 1

"Hurry up Rome! They are starting already! Emma, his best friend shouted.

"Emma, you know I really don't like scenes like this." I shouted back as I pushed myself inside the club. I was having a quiet Friday night at my studio when my best friend burst into the room and told me to take a shower, dress up and that they are going out tonight. In that order.

"Good thing I have a table reserved for us. Here we go." Emma proudly exclaimed.

"What are we doing here anyway? You know I hate crowded places, especially clubs." I whined.

"You need to go out more often and enjoy life Rome! You are always holed up in your studio, you forget that you are only 18 years old and have so much to enjoy! Stop being a spoilsport and just live a little okay?" Emma lectured.

"Well, okay. But who are we watching anyway? I will try to enjoy but if this gets too rowdy and all, I will be out of here." I said.

"We are here to watch to my cousin, Pick, he is the lead singer of the band LifexLies. Don't worry, I know what you are thinking, it is not a pure rock band. They play pop and alternative music. I know you will enjoy their music." Emma answered. "Oh, it is their turn. That's him!" She exclaimed.

I looked at the stage and spotted the guy Emma was pointing. Well, his back was on us so I cannot really tell what he looks like. Then the drummer started the beat and everyone in the room just screamed and then the singer turned his face to the audience. He is good looking that I have to admit. But when he started to sing, I was enthralled at that moment. I wish I had my tools with me; I could have painted this moment better than to use words to describe what I was feeling.

The band played 4 more songs and then it was break time from the live band. Then out of nowhere a girl joined our table.

"Hi Emma! I am glad you made it. Did you enjoy the show?" She sweetly asked.

"Oh, hey Lina! Yes, we did. By the way, this is my best friend, Rome. Rome, this is Lina, shes uhm, Picks girlfriend." Emma sourly answered.

I was shocked and felt a little disappointed. So, he has a girlfriend.

"Hi, it is nice to meet you Lina." I greeted.

"Is this your first time here Rome?" Lina asked.

"Yes, it is. I don't really go out much often." I answered

"Oh, well I hope you are enjoying yourself." She responded

"Of course he is! He is with me." Emma exclaimed.

"Hey Emma! Glad to see you here again!" Porche greeted.

"Hi Porche, I brought my friend with me. Rome meet Porche, Porche meet Rome."

"Hi Rome! I am surprised Emma brought a friend with her. But glad you are here and that you are enjoying yourself." Porche said.

"Thank you." I answered. It was really getting awkward for me. I am not use to this. I wanted to tell Emma that I will go home in a few since I have already watched her cousin performed and I still have an unfinished canvas waiting for me at home.

"Emma, I would need to..."

"Dear Emma! My favorite cousin! You finally decided to watch your coolest cousin!" A guy just suddenly hugged Emma and I almost wanted to call him out.

"Yeah, well you begged nicely so I gave in. I brought my best friend with me. Hey, Rome this is my cousin and the lead singer of LifexLies, Pick. Pick meet my truest best friend, Rome." Emma pulled me to her side and smiled widely.

"Well, hello there Rome. As what my cousin said, I am the lead singer of LifexLies; hope you enjoyed the songs. Glad you could join us." Pick greeted me nicely.

"Hello Pick, nice to meet you." I briefly answered. I was surprised that he looked much better up close but I felt he shone more when he is singing and performing in front of a crowd.

"Hmm, Emma, how are you friends with a very weak guy?" Pick asked. "Look at him, he has such a sweet face and he doesn't talk much."

"Well, he is just like that to people he is not close with. I have known him since we were in elementary. We are tied in the hips. And he has tolerated me all these years." Emma explained with a smile.

Yes, we have been friends since we were kids. We got along so well we decided to stick together till the very end. She is the only one with whom I can share my thoughts, fears and everything about me. You see, I am gay. I found out about it when I was in high school, I realized I was more attracted to boys than girls. But I decided to keep it to myself and share it only to Emma and my family.

My family is a little eccentric you see. My father is a college professor of history in a famous university in England. My mother is a writer and writes about family life and women empowerment. And my sister is part-time comic artist and full time fashion designer and blogger. When I decided to tell them and come out of the closet, I was not exactly surprised that they were very accepting and supportive of my preference. Though my mother kept on reminding me to keep it safe and not live a wanton life, I was still thankful that I have a family that was very open minded and accepting. I decided then that I do not want to disappoint them and cause them any problems. That is why I am living a life under a rock.

When I told Emma about my being gay, she was cool about it. She said, "I am not that picky Rome. I still love you as you. You will always be my best friend." That was 5 years ago, and ever since, she has never left my side, being a true friend to me, always caring, protecting and looking out for me. I was already content and happy.

"Hey Rome, are you going to drink that beer or what!" Someone shouted at me.

,I was pulled back to the present by Porche. "No, I do not drink and I drove here so I really can't drink. Sorry Porche." I politely apologized. I wonder how my latest project will come out. I would need to talk to Dion tomorrow to finalize the dates for the exhibition. I feel that I may not be able to meet the deadline.

The night passed like a blur. At first everything was fun, next thing I knew, Pick and Lina were making out next to me. Wow, and here I thought Lina was a sweet, shy girlfriend, who knew she can be a little loose. But who am I to judge.

By 2AM, I whispered to Emma that we need to go home and that she was drunk already as well. She was hard to convince but I told her that I would leave her (like I will ever do that) if she will not stand up and go home with me. We said our goodbyes to the group and as we exit the bar, we bumped into Pick.

"Are you guys going home?" Pick asked.

"Yes, your cousin is already drunk and I have work to do tomorrow, I would need to wake up early. Thank you for the company. I enjoyed watching you sing." I politely said.

"I am very happy to hear that. Thank you for taking care of my cousin. Sorry if my band mates and I were a little loud. Hope you will come back again to watch us." Pick reached for my right hand and held it.

"Wow, aside from your sweet, girly face, you have a very soft hand. Do you really work?" Pick teased.

I pulled my hand and answered "Yes, I do work. I work a lot that I do not have the time for this." I was scared that he may found out about me.

"Hey, don't be like that, I was just teasing. Look, I want us to get along since you are my cousin's closest friend." Pick explained.

"I'm sorry too, I am just a little tired and sleepy. We will be going now. It was nice meeting you, see you Pick." I left hurriedly dragging Emma out of the bar.

"Goodbye Rome. Sweet dreams." Pick whispered.
