I greeted Lisa with a smile, noting in some small part of my brain that it wasn't forced, and that a certain red haired boy had something to do with it.

“Aspyn,” she said, her turquoise eyes growing wide in surprise. “You look very . . . chipper today.”

I laughed, a breezy thing that belonged wisping through cattails on a warm summer night. “Neal's in here,” I opened the apartment door before turning and heading toward the living room.

He was sitting on his blue baby blanket, cooing at whatever show was flashing on the television. Lisa ran over, practically squealing. “Nee-Nee,” she gushed, “it's been forever, man. How are you?”

Neal grabbed his foot and giggled, his stormy eyes trained diligently on Lisa. It made me slightly envious that he adored her so much. But then I always remembered that I was his mother, and no babysitter bond could overcome that.

“Okay, I'll be back around eightish tonight,” I stated, grabbing my purse and slinging it over my shoulder.

Lisa raised a thick black eyebrow. “That's a bit later than usual, Aspyn.”

Despite myself, I flushed. “Yes, well, there's a lot of stuff going on.”

Lisa grinned, wickedly. “Have fun, Aspyn. Me and Mister Neal here are gonna be playing all day,” she smiled down at him, “Oh yes we are, oh yes we are.”

I leaned down and kissed Neal on the head. “Be back soon, my darling.”
