Alex rocketed out of sleep in record speed.
She fumbled in bed as she struggled to find her glasses in the pitch, black darkness clouding her vision.
She got up out of bed, loping around, looking for a switch. After a period of her just staring in complete darkness, she found a switch and flipped it.
The ceiling fan whirred to life.
She sighed.
Its the left. I've gotta remember, the light is to the left, she thought.
She flipped the left switched and winced as the light exploded through the room.
Finally locating her glasses she put them on, marveling as the world became as clear as day.
She almost forgot she slept in.
On a school day.
She groaned, scurrying across the room, grabbing a pair of pants and an old mickey shirt in her closet.
She wasn't looking to impress people, so she didn't judge.

Alex shoved another spoonful of Lucky Charms in her mouth, eating mostly the marshmallows as usual.
She nervously glanced at the clock on the stove.
Her heart froze, realizing she was going to be late.
She dumped her half-eaten bowl of cereal in the sink.
She grabbed her backpack and paused in front of a mirror, taking in her reflection.
Her stringy brown hair has held back by a lousy ponytail, revealing her amber eyes. She had a pointy nose, and a couple freckles were sprinkled across her cheeks. She had applied a little lipstick to look at least appealing.
She scoffed.
Ugly, she thought
She bolted out the door, remembering her endeavor to get to the bus stop on time.
Alex pushed herself to run faster, churning her legs like she was destined to run; like she was a machine.
She heard footsteps, almost echoing, behind her.
Smiling, she slowed down. She watched as her best friend, Chance, saluted her as he ran past her, reaching the bus stop.
They both skidded to a stop, just as the bus arrived to their destination.
Panting heavily, they boarded the rusty bus, throwing themselves in their seat.
"That was close." heaved Chance.
"Yeah no kidding." sighed Alex.
An amount of time was shared between them while they struggled to catch their breath.Alex had never run that fast. It felt like she had a purpose, and to be honest, she kinda lik-
"Hey, I saw you running like Usain Bolt out there!" Chance said, catching on to the subject lolling around Alex's mind.
Alex chuckled in reply. Here it comes.
"You should join track Alex! You're amazing!"
"Is that a hint of admiration, I hear?" Alex teased.
"Well, yeah! You're cool!" Chanced rebutted.
Alex scoffed. If she was anything, she was anything but cool.
"Aw c'mon! Don't you realize how fast you are?" Chance whined.
"Look C, I only run fast under pressure. hence the 'being late' scenario." Alex said with air quotes.
Chance took on the opportunity.
"Exactly, track can be very... pressuring?" Chance said, mildly unconvincing.
"Yeah, nice try. A 'no' is a no." Alex said, leaning against the window.

Here we go, Alex thought.
Pushing the high school doors open, she straightened her back, ready.
She walked side by side with Chance, grimacing as people fired at her with names and teasing;
"It's The four eyed Freak!"
"Hey, dumbass!"
"Whore."
"Look, its that bitch."
Alex held back tears but continued to stay strong.
This is what they want. Don't give them the satisfaction. Whatever you do,
Dont
Cry.
Alex suddenly felt warmth course through her hand and looked down to see Chance's hand connected to hers.
She glanced up at him and saw a faint blush on his tanned cheeks.
She suddenly felt better and a smile spread across her lips as her tears disappeared behind her eyes.
Suddenly the clamoring of names stopped, as a rumble cascaded down the high school hallway.
Confused murmurs of a possibility of an earthquake in Florida scattered the halls.
Suddenly, Chances hand ran cold.
His eyes widened.
Alex traced his eyes to a window, where her heart also ran cold.
Outside, a blazing black-and-white twister clouded the window, only seconds away from impact.
"Everyone, get down! NOW!" Chances voice boomed.
Moments later, the building collapsed.
