Chapter 1

I almost fell out of the sky again.

It was just a normal day, walking through the streets of Hort except that it was MY BIRTHDAY AND NO ONE REMEMBERED. Minor detail. I'm used it to anyway, I thought ruefully.

But since this year was so important, I had to remind someone. Because if I didn't, faces would probably get blasted.

Anyway let's slow down before your brains explode.

I am Kato Hayashi, the loneliest, most ignored person in Hort because EVERYONE FORGETS ABOUT ME BECAUSE I'M "PATHETIC". Pffft. Maybe people should judge me after I get my combination. For all they know, I could be an emotionless, then faces really would get blasted.

Suddenly, I was thrown backwards and landed awkwardly on a soft, warm thing that wriggled.

"Watch where you're going," the wriggly thing growled menacingly.

"Sorry," I answered meekly, rolling aside to allow him(it sounded like a him)to get up.

As I got up, dusting myself off, I saw him clearly for the first time. A permanent frown creased his brow, and his eyes were filled with rage and fury. Everything about him hinted he knew how to fight. He stood with one foot planted firmly forward, and he leaned in my direction slightly, like he would charge at any moment. His dark red hair flopped over his eyes as he swayed in the gentle breeze, and his mouth was twisted in a sneer.

He opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, but someone squeezed through the crowd and tugged at the back of his shirt.

I took a step backward, and my foot stepped on nothing but thin air. I began to fall through the hole in the ground, thinking 'I'll never get to use my abilities', but the other guy, the nice one, darted forward at the last moment and caught my sleeve, which began to tear from the strain of holding my weight. He let go for a moment, only to readjust his grip more firmly on my arm, pulling me back onto solid ground before turning away with the brute.

"Sorry for the inconvenience. He's like this to everyone," he called over as his shoulder as he dragged the hostile brute away.

The small crowds that had begun to form around the brewing fight began to disperse, as if a girl about to be beaten up and dropped through the ground was no big spectacle, and I was forgotten again. I sniffed indignantly. I could take care of myself anyway. If that brute even tried to touch me, I'd slap him...and then probably run.

I turned back to the hole and glimpsed a dizzying drop, and what would have been my doom if it wasn't for the nice guy. Well, maybe I did need help sometimes...

I squinted up at the sun, which had just cleared the horizon and was beginning to cross the sky. Meaning the revealing ceremony would begin soon, and I couldn't arrive late again, or there might not even be a ceremony, unless there were other teens whose birthdays' landed on this date.

By the time I arrived at the dome, the ceremony was about to begin, which technically meant I was a bit late. I quickly shuffled into line, noting the four other teens standing around with bored expressions. Unfortunately, two of them were the guys from earlier, the hostile brute and the...other guy. I tried to keep my head turned away from them and acted as normal as possible, hoping they wouldn't recognize my clothes.

"Kato Hayashi, step forward!" A voice boomed. I ducked my head, wincing. The reason why I often didn't show up to these ceremonies; this guy was so loud, it was a wonder no one was deaf yet.

I swallowed nervously and tried to ignore all the eyes watching me. Then, I stepped onto the podium and awaited my combination. When everyone in the room gasped in unison, I wondered if there was something wrong. Maybe my powers hadn't manifested, or I was a double fusion, which by the way were NON-EXISTENT SO FAR, they were only a theory. I risked a glance at the starboard behind me, and saw ten symbols carved into the slate. Every. Single. One. Was. Glowing. So faces were getting blasted after all, because I REALLY WAS AN EMOTIONLESS.

Honestly, I didn't know much about the abilities that would probably manifest after today, because one usually never anything learns about them before their revealing ceremony. So I didn't understand what it meant to be an emotionless. The only thing we learn before turning thirteen, is the three wizard types; average wizards, fusion wizards and emotionless wizards.

I hopped off the podium, while the announcer kept calling the rest of the names.

I watched intently and noted all their names in my mind.

Aarid Walters was the hostile brute who ran into me earlier. He was an emotionless.

Kelsie Collins was quite shy, and seemed to try to look smaller than she really was. Also an emotionless.

Ashton Mulder grinned when he stepped onto the podium, but his smiled seemed stretched and fake. Emotionless again.

Hosah Spencers had blank eyes which scanned the crowd, her face was straight and bored. She showed no recognition when she was also revealed as an emotionless.

Five emotionless. In the same generation. In the same year. Born on the same day.

Why?

And how?
