When I went to school the next day I didn't see Cassie any where.

I assumed she was absent and went about my day. After school was over I got on my phone and texted her.

"Missed you today. Are you okay.?" I nervously hit send and waited for a response.

"Hey, missed you too. Yeahh, I'm fine but my dads not. He almost drowned yesterday and he can't remember how his boat sank. :("

My eyes grew wide and I dropped my phone. I was the reason her father almost died. I picked my phone back up with shaking hands and typed a response.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he's doing well, anything I can do to help.?" I took a deep breath.

As much as I wanted to help and be there for her I just couldn't. Her dad can't know who I am.

My phone vibrated and made me jump out of my thoughts.

"Thank you, but no it's alright. He's doing well thanks for asking. I'm sure you've heard about him claiming that mermaids are real.?"

Does she believe him.? Or does she think it's stupid.?

"Yeah, I've heard but I had no clue that it was your dad." With each text written and sent I was extremely nervous.

I sat down in the couch and placed my hand on my knee. I immediately jumped and gave a short yell.

My body jolted meaning I had shocked myself.

"Not again.." I whispered and rubbed my knee.

Just then my phone vibrated and I carefully picked up my phone, hoping I didn't accidental shock it.

"Yeah, it's my dad. Honestly I think the whole thing is kind of wack. I mean mermaids and mermen.? It doesn't sound too real."

I sighed when I read the message. I was torn between relieved and sad. I didn't really know what to think.

"You don't think that there could be even the slightest possibility that they are real.?" I asked wondering what her response would be.

"Well, I don't know. Some people think mermaids/mermen are scary and mean creatures of the sea. Some think they are nice, colorful and friendly people of the deep blue. If anything, I'd have to see it to believe it. It's just too.. mythical, I guess. Do you believe in them.?"

Well she wasn't wrong. Some people do really think they are ugly, mean and scary creatures because of the documentaries but that's not true. I mean look at me and my friends.

"Yeah, I'd like to believe that they exist."

"Really.? A teenage boy thinks mermaids/mermen are real."

What.? Did it sound childish or something.?

"Yes really, the ocean is huge, we haven't even explored most of it. You never know what you could find swimming around." I defended myself.

"Relax Archer, I'm just messing with you. I think it's cool that you were willing to share that even though it's a little girly. ;)"

I smiled to myself and gave a small laugh.

If only we could be together I thought. There's no way we could now with her dad wanting to destroy my life basically.

"Yeah, I feel a whole lot better now that I've gotten it off my chest. -.-"

"Enough with the sarcasm. :) I'm coming back to school tomorrow, we should eat lunch together."

I smiled and had already written my reply. "Yeah, of course. ;)" and I hit send.

I sighed and sat back into the couch. If I'm not planning on being her boyfriend then why am I hanging out with her.? I'm just leading her on if I do.

"Great, I'll see you then. ;)"

"See you then." I sent back and put my phone in my pocket.

I'm such a horrible guy.
