Spider-Man swung around the skyscrapers of New York. People looked up, thrilled to see their hero, well those who still saw him as a hero anyway. It had been a month since the Goblin "incident" and things returned to normal, well some version of normal for Peter. His best friend's father was dead and he blamed him for it, well his alter ego anyway. Peter tried to be there for Harry, hanging out with him, talking to him but nothing worked, only Gwen could even get him to smile. Gwen. The mention of her name made Peter's heart flutter.
He waited too long. She waited for him for so long and he didn't see it. But she was doing the right thing, staying with Harry, he needed her. Peter decided he needed to get to school and swung to an alley. He changed into his normal clothes and put his Spidey outfit in his book bag. He walked into the school courtyard. He looked up and saw her, there was Gwen sitting on the stone fountain. He started involuntarily walking towards her. Just because they weren't dating didn't mean they couldn't be friends right? They hadn't talked much since Mr. Osborn's death, she was always with Harry.
"Um... hi Gwen." He managed to croak out. Come on what was that? Hey? Really? Ah this was gonna be so ackward.
She smiled and looked up. "Hey Pete. How's it going?""Well you know, could be better...
She nodded and gave him a look of understanding. For a moment their eyes met. Her beautiful turquoise eyes. Peter got lost in them. Their moment was interrupted by someone clearing their throat. It was Harry, looking down as always.
"What's up guys?" He said looking at the both of them. Peter swore he saw a hint of suspicion in his eyes. He shrugged it off and looked at Harry.
"Nothing much man." Harry put his arm around Gwen and gave her a kiss on the cheek and Peter decided to go before he lost his cool.
"I'm gonna go see how MJ is doing. I'll catch up with you guys later."
Harry simply nodded but Gwen looked at him. "Okay. Bye Pete."
Peter waved and entered school and MJ came up to him.
"How are ya tiger?" She asked sympathetically. He had told her all about him and Gwen's plan, and how it fell apart after the death of Harry's father. She had been so understanding and helped him try and get through it as best she could.
"Good not great."
She took his hand and gave it a squeeze.
"It's gonna be alright....
Was it though? The heartbreak, the guilt, being Spider-Man, it was a bit too much. He nodded and kept walking only to be met by Sally and the popular crowd.
"Well if it isn't heartbreaker Parker....
He flinched as he remembered what breaking up with Liz was like. Now she wouldn't even look at him.
Sally smiled. "What? Sad that you've run out of hearts to break now that Little Miss Geek rejected you?" Peter clenched his fists. He usually let things like this go but not toda
"Not today Sally! Buzz off! Why don't you go shake some pom poms and fail a test somewhere!" He snapped. Everyone in the hallway stopped what they were doing and looked at him like they couldn't believe he just said that. Peter walked off without another word leaving everyone dumbfounded, including Sally and Liz.
The day flew by. Nothing of note happened. They had a new project in Biology or something, Peter really wasn't paying attention. He was sitting next to Harry and Gwen. Now he was racing out of school so he could start his patrol as Spider-Man. He was almost out of the door when a female voice stopped him.
