Last Goodbyes- Alternate Allegiant Ending

The air in Tobias’ room encased him, suffocating him. He felt numb, lost and empty. It has been ten days since her death. Ten days without her. Ten days without feeling her lips against his. The day Tobias had been dreading has finally crept up. Today was the day where he would have to say his last goodbyes.

Tobias lies on Tris' side of the bed and squeezes his eyes shut. With a small ounce of hope, he thought he would awake to her lying next to him. He lets out a shaky breathe and buries his face into her pillow, hoping find comfort within it. The smell of her still lingers in the pillow but like all good things, it shortly disappears. He lets out cries into the pillow, not knowing what else to do. It hurt. It hurt more than anything else.

“Why did you have to leave so soon, Tris?” he whispers.

“Tobias?” Christina says shakily as she gives the door a soft knock. “It’s time to go.”

He slowly walks to the door and wipes his tears away on the sleeve of his suit. He opens the door and immediately pulls Christina into an embrace. A few seconds slip away and she pulls away and looks up to him, her eyes also swollen from crying.

“We are such a mess.” Christina says in a half hearted laugh.  “Dauntless aren’t supposed cry.”

“You’ll always be that Candor smart-mouth won’t you?” Tobias says trying to smile.

Only the first three rows were filled. The room suddenly hushed as Christina and Tobias walked in. It was an open casket ceremony. Caleb sat next to Cara, the both of them speakingin hushed voices. Tobias’ jaw clenches at the sight of him. He wanted to blame him for being the reason why Tris is gone but Tris would not have wanted it. Caleb, the last member of the Prior family didn’t have a trace of tears on his face. He sat up straight, emotionless. A sweet scent of lilies and honey roam the air. Christina and Tobias take their seat in the front next to each other. One by one, everyone except for Tobias have gone up to say their last goodbyes. He just could not stir up the courage to do it. He didn’t want this to be the last time he could see her. A lump rises in Tobias’ throat as time slowly slips away.

“Go Tobias.” Christina says softly. “Before it’s too late.”

Tobias slowly rises from his seat, slightly unsteady. There are only four steps to her casket. Every step her took towards her felt like getting shot. He could not bear to see her once vibrant face lifeless.
