the wind tugs gently at my unzipped sweater as we walk towards the, filled to the brim, mall. My short, brown hair whipping along my face. As I pull my sweater tight, Sloan begins to squeak about a small going on in her favourite store. She begins to pill me and Quinn faster, nearly dragging us.
"Hey!" Quinn protests, warning Sloan to slow down, despite her own eagerness. Sloan continues to tug at our arms, blindly leading us into the large, crowed mall.
"I can't believe I skipped school for this." I say in monotone as we enter the mall. Sloan drops both mine and Quinn's arms, raising her palms to her face begins to race away through the packed mall. Rolling my arms dramatically, I trail behind Sloan, and her shopping twin, Quinn.
"Come on, silly! Pick up the pace!" Quinn chirps happily, walking faster than before. I nearly trip on half the people in the mall before I get slammed against a strangers chest. My throat dries and my hands shake as I slowly take a few steps back from the amazing smelling man. I peer to the side subtly, seeing that Sloan and Quinn have disappeared.
I take a few more steps back, glancing around more noticeably, my face warming gently. My fear claims me and takes me to an anxiety filled home. The man blinks at me once, twice; almost as confused as I am.
"I...uhm...sorry, i didn't see you." I stutter out nervously. He smiles kindly back at me, making my cheeks redden lightly. I fiddle with my sweater sleeves awkwardly, wanting the time to pass faster; the idea of leaving just reaching my head. I mumble sorry again as I begin to walk away from the overly kind stranger.
"Hey!" He shouts at me. I pretend to not hear, even thought I can hear him as clear as day. He follows behind me as close as he can with all the extra people in the mall. I hear a few words that I can't make out, then a loud grunt. I look behind me quickly to see him pushing through the hundreds of strangers to get to me, I blush a deeper rose. Then I hear someone say, "I know you can hear me shy girl." Then the voice vanishes. I don't turn around or stray my path at all for this boy.
Minutes later, after I escape the mall murder crowd, I feel a light touch on my shoulder; a gentle breath on my neck. I pray it's either Quinn or Sloan playing a trick on me, but the voice is a dead give away.
"Are you hiding from me? Are you a spy? FBI?" The man I slammed into followed me to the empty space by the furniture store. His voice jokingly trails down my neck, giving me goosebumps. He begins to rub circles on my shoulder, waiting for my answer. I shrug his hand off my shoulder and begin to walk away, playing the "spy" card he handed me.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!!" He says, pursuing me further. I struggle to keep a straight face and quiet lip. "My names Josh." He says, slowing his walk until he stops five steps behind me. I turn nonchalantly and give him a head nod, josh crosses his arms. "Your turn." I roll my eyes and step towards him, offering my hand.
"The names Ryan, but people call me Ry." We shake hands after my statement, he smiles again, I smirk. "Why'd you follow me , josh?" I say, putting emphasis on his name. He shrugs
"You intrigued me." Josh says, shrugging. I think back to the way we met, me walking into him and saying sorry awkwardly. I don't think that's intriguing, just odd.
"Damnit, I'm supposed to be inconspicuous! You blew my cover man!" I groan, i guess I'm a spy now.
"Secret agent Ry, i can see your name in lights!" He grins dorkily, waving his hands. I shake my head, smiling foolishly.
"Thats the exact opposite of what my name is supposed to be." I protest calmly. Josh laughs deeply, making my eyes widen. He looks at me confused.
"What's wrong?" He asks sweetly, making my heart melt. I shake my head and wave my arm to say nothing. But he crosses his arms and gives me the "I know you're lying" stare.
"Your laugh is amazing..." I say blushing slightly, he follows in suit. Rubbing his neck gently, he passes me a note from deep inside his front pocket. I look at him confused, he opens his eyes fully, signalling me to unfold it.
The paper nearly rips as I pull back the folds. The inside of the note says, in carefully written words:
Please don't hit on me, I just want to be friends.
I let out a deep breath and hug him lightly. He smiles and I nod, smiling back.
From the corner of my eye I see two girls bouncing over, covered in bags filled with clothes. Their eyes widen at the sight of me with a boy, running over.
"Hi , I'm Sloan, and this is Quinn." Says Sloan confidently, turning her head and winking at me.
Oh god.
