Prologue
The salt smell of the sea is still in my hair. I bury my feet in the hot sand. I thought that swimming would do me good, but nothing was less true. Now, I miss my home even more. I even thought that I could see the mountains of Dorne at the horizon. I miss everything about home. The sea. The flowers. The smell. The people.
It is precisely one year since I've been brought to Kings Landing. My father sold me as a slave to the Lannisters. That is the only thing I don't miss about. My father. All he ever did, was drink, fuck, sleep and eat. He always abused my older sister. Marida, her name is. But he never laid a hand on me. I never knew why he left me alone. And I will never know. A few weeks ago I got a letter from my sister, saying our father died during hunting. I am not ashamed to say it has not made me sad. The letter also said that my sister got married with a knight from the North. I had to destroy the letter, because if the Lannisters would find out that my siser is married to someone who fights for Robb Stark, they will hunt her down and kill her.
I am a Lannister slave, and every day is the same here in the capital of the seven Kingdoms. I bring the Lannisters food, I wash their clothes, make their beds, I please whoever they want me to please. Tywin Lannister has named me his personal cupbearer. I have been treated well ever since I've got here. They gave me food and a bed. My father must have paid them a lot of money because there are other slave girls who are just the same as me, who have got to sleep down by the dogs.
The sun is going down. I think it is time to go back to the castle. Tywin has given me until sunset to do thing of my own. I put a sunset orange silk ribbon in my brown curly hair. My sister gave it to me when I left. The stone steps are hot underneath my bare feet. When I pass the garden, I see a man lifting big rocks. His gray beard is dark from the mud. He used to be a high council member, but his son was accused of treason. The son got killed, and lord Chandos, well he is not a lord anymore, is lucky to be alive. If it wasn't for Tyrion, crows would be picking his eyes out of his dead body. Tyrion defended him a the hearing. He and Tywin are the only Lannisters I don't despise. Tyrion has always been very kind to me. He is a good man. His sister and nephew on the other hand are the worst people I have ever met. And believe me, I have met a lot of people. No one cares more about themselfes than King Joffrey and Queen Cersei. And then there is Jaimie. I do not know what to think of Jaimie. Sometimes he can be kind, but other times he treats me like a dog.
I am a very good house maid, if I say so myself. I listen to what is told, I do what has been commended and I keep my own problems to myself. Tyrion once told me that I can consider myself lucky. We talk sometimes, Tyrion and I. He says I give good advise, and he is interrested in the stories I tell him about what happens in the castle when the Lannisters don´t look. He also tells me things about the Lannisters that I don´t know, like stories about legendary battles that were won by the Lannisters. I don´t think he tells these stories to other maids. He is the only person in Kings Landing that makes me feel like I belong anywhere. That I am home.
