everything is quiet and dark on the ship aurora. Nothing stirs as aurora moves. All the creatures dont make sounds as they wait for something to happen.
Then in the still of the night a shriek is heard. A horse is giving birth. She moans softly and closes her eyes as she pushes the foal out. She stands up and shakes. When she turns her head to look at the foal she neighs softly.
The foal is as black as the night sky with white spots as white as snow. The foal shivers, cold. It tries to stand but falls down. It tries again and succeeds.
The mare starts grooming the foal and notices its a mare-foal. The mare sighs in joy and nuzzles her baby to her side, where the baby nurses.
~later~
"She died of fever... giving birth didnt help her" said a mans gruff voice.
"Who will care for the foal drew?" Says a soft sweet voice of a 16 year old standing beside the foal and the foals dam.
"Alias i dont know." Says drew.
"I will then." Alias says.
"Fine" drew says as he leaves.
The foal looks at alias and sighs heartbroken.
Alias looks at the foal and whispers" if only you could talk. Ill give you a name. How about arahi?" The foal answers by nuzzleing alias.
~ 1 hour earlier~
The mare lays down huffing and gasping for air.
She looks at the foal.
"My sweet baby come here."
The foal comes closer to her dam and questions" why are you sick?"
The mare smiles" thats for a later time. Its not your fault sweety. Its time i named you."
The foal nods listening intently.
The other animals are silent and listening.
The mare sighs softly" after much consideration.. i will name you moonshadow."
Moonshade nods"whats your name mum?"
"Nightshade." The dam replies.
Moonshadow thinks" does that mean da name was moon somthing?"
"Yes.. his name...was moondancer.. i love you moonshadow" Nightshade sighs and takes her last breath.
The foal shrieks as her dam dies and cries.
