Bizarre Night
One shotThe midnight of October; the weather was freezing because of the after rain. The wind whistled. Its coldness was as sharp as frozen water the moment it hits the softness of flowers and the mightiness of trees.
City lights decorated the busy, damped streets, illuminating each path and establishments where different people gathered with different reasons and agendas—to work, to burn time, to reflect, and to explore.
Meanwhile, a kid was standing at the middle of the road. Her eyes scanned the visible area with her innocent eyes. There's no one around in her point of view—no busy streets, no cars, no vendors—the city looked dull in her young vision. It all looked like a canvass with no colors at all. Beautifully empty.
She started to wonder why she's in the middle of the city, wondering why she can stand when she's supposed to be confined still in a hospital because she's sick. She checked herself and noticed she's still wearing the same hospital gown. Now, what happened?
"Oh, hallo," An unknown kid popped up in front of her. Her forehead creased with the sudden appearance and took a step back out of mere instinct. But she's in awe nonetheless. "Are you lost like me?"
"Lost?" She repeated. She stared at the kid who's wearing a blue pyjama. He's a good looking boy. "Do you know where we are?"
The little boy smiled, showing his teeth. "We are in the playground!"
She nodded. A playground, huh, she mumbled. She's never been in a playground for she was born weak. She easily gets tired and had a poor heart, that's why.
"Come, come!" The kid excitedly grabbed her arm. They started to run like the time was chasing them. She smiled, feeling good as the wind kissed her being. It felt cold and refreshing. "Let's meet the other kids!"
The thought of what the boy had said created a warm feeling deep inside her. It opened something, it had given her a torch of light to hold on, and she was given hope. Meeting new kids; making friends with them, it's what she'd wanted to do ever since but she didn't have the chance because her sickness ate her without remorse.
Her disease imprisoned her empty childhood. She was obliged to fight in order to survive.
She miraculously ran without finding it hard to breathe, without feeling her heart choking her to death. She ran, and ran, and ran, like a mad man who went out of its comfort zone. She ran for the first time.
They finally stopped into a wide, green field. There's a light post everywhere. She smiled. There were many kids like her! Her heart thumped with unexplainable joy.
"Welcome to our playground." The boy said. She stared at him and giggled as she couldn't contain her excitement. He smiled at her reaction. "Come." The boy lent his hand to her. She gladly took it as they went nearer to the kids who were just waiting for them.
All of them were smiling, they all looked so friendly. Each one of them introduced their names with great enthusiasm. She didn't remember all of them but she's certain she'll never forget their faces and most of all, their smiles.
"I'm Alice." She finally introduced her name.
"And I'm Harry by the way." The boy shook her hand. "Want to play?"
She nodded, hyped with the thoughts of different kind of fun. She wouldn't want to wake up if everything was just a dream. She felt happy, so happy. For the first time, she became a normal kid who just wanted to play and enjoy the world has to offer.
They ran and chased each other. Laughs and screams of joy filled the entire field. It echoed around the paradise area, creating beautiful music—and they all saved it on their memories.
