I smiled as I spun and did two claps, then laughed with the rest of the women in the room. "Good job, ladies!" I said as I smiled wider. "With a couple more dance classes, I might be able to get my husband a little happy - if you know what I mean!" Mrs. Ler said as she shook her chest. I laughed and covered my mouth, Mrs. L, you bad girl. Don't give him a heart attack." I said. She laughed and waved me off with her hand as she slowly walked to her bag. I taught a dance class for the elderly and I loved it. "See you next week, ladies!" I yelled as everyone exited the studio. I blew out a breath and sat on the ground, letting my mind wonder.
Giving dance classes to elderly women was not how I pictured my life as a twenty-four year old to be. I thought I'd be off at Julliard making a name for myself. Obviously that didn't happen. I thought I'd be engaged to a successful chocolate man with a big house and Labrador. Boy, was I wrong! The only chocolate I have is the Hershey bar melting at the bottom of my gym bar.
The ringing of my phone brought me out of my conversation with myself. "Yes, mother?" I rolled my eyes. The only time she ever calls is to preach to me about being a 'strong black woman' and grandchildren. Geez, the woman doesn't give me a break. "Are you married yet?" She asked, a hint of a smile in her voice. I laughed, "I wasn't yesterday, and I'm not today."
"When are you coming down here?"
"Why?" There's always a method to her madness.
"Some here wants to see you. Are you heading out tonight?"
I sighed and rolled my eyes. She's always trying to set me up with one of her stuck of friend's sons. "I'll get there when I can, mother." I told her. She giggled before blowing a kiss through the phone and hanging up.
I stood and ran my hands over my face. I gathered up my stuff and was soon out of the door and into my car. I sat there for a moment to prepare myself for the two hour drive to my mother's.
