Chapter 8
Doctor Early, needed at base
The lady on the speaker page the older doctor.
Joe stood up and walked out, Dixie on his tail. They met up with a desk nurse and Dr Early took over the intercom.
"Rampart, 51." Joe took the nurse's clipboard and read the notes.
"Rampart, we have a male, around 40 years old. BP is 90/60 and pulse is rapid. He has small contusions on his head and multiple bruises on his arms and legs."
Dixie frowned as she listened she left to get a room ready. She then traveled quickly back to the call station.
"10-4." Squad 51's driver, Roy DeSoto said before hanging up.
"Rooms ready, Joe."
"Thanks, Dix." Joe smiled and leaned against the counter to wait for the new patient.
"Dr Early?" A worried sounding voice said.
Joe turned around and saw the student nurse, Sharon Walters, standing there.
"Yes, Nurse?"
"It's Doctor Brackett, he's...it seems he's come down with something."
"Dixie will you look in on that, I've got to wait for this victim. Nurse, come with me to treatment room 3." Dr Early said with efficiency.
Dixie nodded and turned around quickly, walking hastily to Dr Brackett's room. She entered and saw him moving and mumbling in his sleep. She felt his head and checked his pulse.
"Kel?" She shook him. In an attempt to wake her moving patient.
He jolted upright and flung a fist in Dixie's direction, who quickly stepped back into safety.
"Glad to see your active.." Dixie said sarcastically. Brackett smiled shyly at her and relaxed back into the pillows. His frown told Dixie everything.
"When'd it start?" She folded her arms.
"A few days ago. Thought it was because of the things ya been poking me with." He chuckled but it immediately turned into a cough.
"Your temp. is 101."
"Yeah...don't feel so good."
"That's why you attacked me?"
"No. Sorry bout that." Taking hold of his favorite nurse's hand, he pulled Dixie closer him.
"I'm not coming to close, incase I catch it. If I can." She wagged a finger and rested her hands on the covers.
Kel smiled sleepily, his eyelids flickered and then he closed them for good. Dixie checked his vitals once more and then closed the blinds.
"Dix?"
Dixie jumped at the sudden husky voice. She turned on her heels and faced Kel once again.
"I thought you were asleep?"
"I woke up again."
She sat down on the edge of his bed and held his hand.
"Where's Joe?"
"With a victim the paramedics brought in."
Kel nodded and smiled weakly. "Can you finish your 'tale' when he's done?"
"Oh, Kel! You need to rest."
"If I fall asleep while you're talking, which I'll probably do, then it be just the same. But I really want to hear what I don't know."
