ACT I SCENE I

{Complete blackout. Suddenly a spotlight appears on ALESSIA. She is in a baggy plaid shirt and leggings. She has a MACBOOK AIR on her crossed legs. Lights up on set. A minimalist-style bedroom. Pillows, sheets, duvet. *Walls are painted salmon pink*. On the walls, posters of LAURYN HILL, AMY WINEHOUSE, P!NK, BLACK EYED PEAS, DRAKE, & ED SHEERAN.}

ALESSIA

(single spotlight, centre stage, black stage)

(Alessia walking moving to the side. Pan to YOUNG ALESSIA age 5/6 and VINNY going through scrapbook on bedroom floor. YOUNG ALESSIA is holding a teddy bear wearing a HABS jersey. ENZA slowly streams in with a coffee mug in hand and a motherly gaze.)

VINNY & ENZA

(looking at a wedding picture of the two of them)

ONLY PHOTOGRAPHS REMIND US

OF THE PASSING OF DAYS

OH NOTHING STAYS THE SAME

FROM YESTERYEAR

(VINNY and ENZA walk off in separate directions leaving YOUNG ALESSIA alone.)

ALESSIA

(shadow tableaux of ENZA and VINNY fighting. YOUNG ALESSIA runs to bed and hides under white duvet.)

SEE I RECALL

BEING AFRAID OF THE DARK

AND HOLDING ON TO TEDDY BEARS

I'D WRAP MYSELF IN BLANKETS

JUST TO COVER ME FROM FEARS

THAT WAS THEN AND NOW I'M HERE

AND THE NIGHT IS MINE

SO HEAR ME SCREAM

I WAS TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS

I COULDN'T WAIT TILL I COULD BE SEVENTEEN

(ALESSIA pulls YOUNG ALESSIA out from under the bed covers, holds her hand, brings her to VINNY stage left)

I THOUGHT HE LIED WHEN HE SAID

VINNY

(to YOUNG ALESSIA)

TAKE YOUR TIME AND DREAM

(kisses her on the forehead and they walk off stage left hand in hand)

ALESSIA

NOW I WISH I COULD FREEZE THE TIME AT SEVENTEEN
