"But mummy!" the little squealed as she watched her favorite ball roll on the street. "That's good child." the girls mother spoke but her eyes stayed fixed onto the screen of the phone that she held in her hands. The phone was an unhealthy closeness to her face as she frantically typed away on it,giving the child no attention. The girl huffed loudly and began running in the direction of the ball which was in the middle of the road. Her brown locks accompanying her blue dress that were flowing with the wind as she made her way over to the road. She has done what she learnt at school. Safety first. She looked left, then right and left again. She smiled when the road was clear of any vehicles and skipped to the ball. Suddenly a loud hoot was heard causing the child to look up. A truck speeding toward her. The man inside didn't even see the child because of her small size. And just like that the girl had been knocked by humoungous bumpers that sent her through the air for a few seconds before she her body fell to the ground.
Libby woke up in shock. She Sat up straight in her single bed and looked around the semi lit room. She moved her pale blue curtains to the side to peer outside to be greeted by a sky that still had stars. She then looked over at her alarm clock. The digital clock flashed a green 04:09. She groaned loudly and fell back onto her pillow and closed her eyes. She turned a little to the right and then to the left and moved around a little. After a solid half an hour of tossing and turning Libby thought that it would be best if she just got out of bed. She grabbed two random pieces of clothing from her closet and set them on her bed that was yet to be set. She sighed as she made her way into the shower. She slowly removed her clothing and stepped into the shower and under the water that was the perfect temperature. She stood still for a couple of minutes before washing herself. She stepped passed the shower doors and wrapped her towel around herself and walked back to her room. She quietly Sat down on her bed and looked at outside through the curtains she then peered back to her clock that flashed a bright 05:02. She let her head hang. Libby already knew that this was going to be a long day. Her thoughts were interrupted by the loud clatter of an object. "Maya must be awake." she said loudly. She put on her blue bath gown and walked to her best friends room. "You're up?" Maya asked as she looked at Libby. Libby sighed and nodded. "Same dream again?" Maya asked as she got up from picking up the broken glass from the floor. "The same damn one. For two weeks." Libby finally spoke. "Well technically one week and four days." Maya said as the two of them began walking to the kitchen. "Ugh!" was Libby's response.
Frustrated. That was the word to describe the way Libby was feeling currently and most of the time since she's had the dream. The dream about the little girl. It made no sense to her. "Does this usually happen to people? Like is it normal for people to have the same dream over and over?" Libby asked as she looked into the fridge for something to eat but soon lost her appetite to the sight of milk which always makes her sick in the mornings. "No. This is some real Alice In Wonderland shit." she joked trying to lighten Libby's mood. Libby smiled widely at her best friend. "Wow."
Maya then went upstairs to get ready for school, leaving Libby alone as usual. Libby did have a job but she didn't start at eight o'clock in the morning. She would usually just watch TV to pass the time until she had to go to work in the tattoo parlour down street. Libby greeted her friend goodbye before going upstairs to get ready for the day. This day Maya and Libby actually made plans to finally hang out during the day. After Maya got a scholarship to VVU(Victoria Village University.) Libby and her hadn't seen much of each other because of late nights working on projects and staying extra time so she can stick that job at NASA as an astrophysicist. But Libby didn't mind in fact she was proud of her for doing great things with her life.
"So tell me,what's actually happening in this dream of yours? " Maya asked as she took a slurp from her jumbo shake. "Oh. It's a little girl. Right. And she's playing in the park with a ball. Her mum is there too. She kicks her ball a bit too hard and it rolls onto the street. She asks her mother to come with her to get it but she's so interested in her damn phone that she doesn't even pay the littlest attention to the child and so she runs off to try and get it herself. When she goes onto the street she doesn't see this truck and she gets hit by it." Libby explained as they sat on their favorite bench in the park. "It happens here?" Maya looked around. The ground covered in children's jungle gyms becoming spooky to her. They stayed silent for a while before Mate's watch began beeping annoyingly loud. Libby cringed when the sound met her eardrums. "Crap. I gotta go." Maya said as she stood up and started assembling her things. "But we just got here." Libby complained. "I know. I know. I'll make it up to you !" she exclaimed as he ran toward her friends car that had gotten here a some time after she got the alert. Maya walked straight to the car without giving Libby another look. The car sped off as soon as she closed the door . Libby then got a message from Maya who apologised for leaving early. "Just great." Libby sighed. She picked up her jumbo shake and put her phone in her back pocket before starting her walk home. She got home in no time as she did not live very far away from the park. She didn't mind the walk,it gave her time to think. She shoved the key into the door and turned it before walking into the house. She felt more tired than she had this morning and her eyelids became heavier. She sat down on the couch and she was out.
She was awoken by the sound of Maya's voice. "Libby,Libby? Wake up!" she called out. Libby's eyes shit open as she stared at Maya. "Get up." She said again. "Maya? What time is it?"
"Ten thirty."
"What? But I came home like-"
"That was yesterday, hun." Libby shook her head and sat up straight. "Come on. Go get ready. We're foignnto the park." Maya said while putting dishes into the cupboard. "Uh okay."
This was new for Libby. Its been a while since Maya's been like this. Another thought interrupted this one. Libby remembered that she had the same dream once again. It frustrated her. But she couldn't change it and that was a problem.*
"You lie! You didn't have the same damn dream again!" Maya shouted loud enough for anyone near them to hear. "Shh,we are in public you peasant!" Libby teased as they made their way to their favorite bench and sat. "That's crazy Libby. I mean that's a straight two weeks!" She exclaimed again. This time there had been no answer from Libby. Not even the slightest remark against the loudness of her voice. "Libby?" Maya let out, looking at Libby. Libby had a shocked expression on her face. As if she were troubled. "What is it?" Maya asked as she tried to look in the same area as Libby to try and figure out what she was specifically staring at? Her eyes were wide and her mouth was slightly open. "Its her.." Libby finally said. "Who?" Maya was completely confused. "The girl from my dream." Libby said after. "What? No,that can't be." Maya moved closer to look at the little girl playing in front of them. Maya's mouth had opened in shock as well. Exactly as Libby had described the girl is right there in front of them, playing with a ball. The child soon kicked the ball a bit far and it rolled all the way onto the street. Maya and Libby watched in awe as the girl called out to her mother while pointing in the direction of the ball. She than huffed and began running toward the street. What happens next hadn't even crossed their minds because of the shock that was in their bodies. Libby then filled with realisation. "Maya, the truck. The truck!" she shouted as they stood up and began running very fast toward the child. They had just made it a little past the oak tree when she had already reached the end of the street. She then proceeded to look the two different directions before happily skipping into the middle of the road, bending down and getting the ball. Maya and Libby watched in shock as everything in Libby's dream came true. And they, they were too late. They didn't get there in time and the poor child had died. It was then only when the mother dropped her phone and ran straight to where everything happened. Maya got her phone out and dialled the ambulance. She had no idea what had just happened. But it did. Something that seemed could only be real in story books and movies just took place in front of them. Libby was just as frazzled. She couldn't believe her eyes. Something was definitely wrong here. The ambulance came rushing down the street and stopped right there where the mother had been holding her lifeless daughter in her arms, tears streaming down her face. They soon found out that the truck driver was drunk and that's why he didn't see her. He was too intoxicated to pay attention. He was arrested and the matter would have to be taken to court. Both Libby and Maya we're thankful that they won't be asked to court as witnesses. The police, however did grill them with all sorts of questions that none of them were in the mood to answer. But they had to. The best friends went home with equal amounts of disbelief and fear. Disbelief of what just happened. And fear that it might happen again.
