FOOLING AROUND

It was 1 in the morning and I slowly blinked awake to light taps on my bedroom window.  Sleepily, I forced my eyes to open just in time to see a small pebble come hurling itself at the glass and ricochet off before tumbling over the shingles.  Pleading with my limbs every step of the way, I stumbled over to the window and looked outside.  As Jack bent over to grab another piece of gravel, he wobbled and fell over.  Before I knew it, I was flying down the stairs and into the driveway where Jack wrestled with himself.  I watched for a few moments as he laughed hysterically and mumbled to himself.  "Jack?" The early morning fogged my breath and carried my call crisply through the dark.

"Jenna!" Jack stared at me for too long before scrambling to his knees and knee walking over to me, brushing off his shirt as if it made him look less foolish. When Jack was closer I could make out the bags under his eyes and the stale, reeking whiskey stains on his shirt.  "Jenna," he burst out laughing and buried his face into my leg, the stench of cigarette smoke lurked up and made me cough as I wafted it away.  His sweaty hands took mine and I stepped back, stunned, sending Jack down onto all fours.  "Jenna, no, cmm back...I'm sorry, I'zz just messin’ around."  I raised my eyebrows at him in response and watched as he struggled to get up, "Jenna, please? I look like nn idiot, can you jsst...help me?"  Hesitantly, I stepped forward and lifted Jack back up to his knees and then to his feet.  On his way, Jack stopped eye-level with my breasts and pointed at them with a wavering finger.  "Whoa!" he stared and laughed before I jerked him up the rest of the way and stepped back.  So much for Prince Charming.

"Jack, what are you doing here?  You're drunk, and you need to go home.  Come on, I'll take you."  I started walking back to the house to get my keys.

"No!" Jack said more coherently than he'd said anything all night - the change caught me off guard.  "I'm exactly where I want to be."

I didn't blink for what seemed like an eternity as I stared, dumbfounded.  I'd heard these lines before, I knew the game, but I wanted to believe his lies.  In a split second I fell in lust with a man who didn't belong to me.

Once we got inside the house it was so easy, I closed my eyes and forgot what right was, what remorse was, all I knew was Jack.
