I bit my lip as I stared at the calendar in my room, feeling nervous about school starting tomorrow. I had no idea what to expect. I was 14 and finally starting high school.
I knew to expect bullying though. That never changes. I've always been small. Really small. Like, even now, at 14, I'm only about 4'7"-4'8". And I've always hated it. I can never reach most things, and it's stupidly easy for most bullies to subdue me. I'm just hoping that it'll all change when I hit my growth spurt.
"Bailey, honey, I got all the supplies on your list. Are you excited for school tomorrow?" My mom asked from my doorway.
"I'm nervous, but...I'll be okay. Thank you, mom." She closed the door behind her as she left.
My dad died when I was 4, so it's pretty much always been just me and my mom. We get along well, and we get by as far as money goes too, but we don't do a whole lot of activities anymore. Not in other places, at least. At home, we did all kinds of pottery and ceramics together. That was our "Family Time".
My phone buzzed with a text message. I only had three friends, so it wasn't hard to guess who it was. It was Tommy, one of my friends. Tommy is an average height, but skinny guy with long black hair, usually tied back in a short ponytail who lives around the block from me. He's 17, and the driver of our group. He's also a big time pothead, but he's not stupid about it. He's not even really open about it.
You ready for tomorrow? His text read.
No, not really... I replied. Though I know my friends will have my back, I can't shake the anxiety I have about most things.
Well that's okay. Bailey, you know if anything happens, Brian, Kevin, and I all have your back. And Hayley says she'll have you too. This text made me smile. Hayley was Tommy's girlfriend. She's also a really badass boxer, so I felt safe around her. My friend, Kevin, too. He does Muay Thai and Kickboxing, and he's REALLY good. Brian was our nerd/geek. You could ask him anything about science, history, or technology, and he'll have an answer. He's also the biggest smartass I know.
I looked at the time on my phone. 7:56 PM. I set my alarm for the morning and put my phone on the charger. I looked up at the ceiling and sighed deeply.
"Tomorrow, I start something new...so...I'll have to make the best of it." I promised myself before drifting off to sleep early. I had a big day tomorrow.
