"Max," He'd Say

Max wasn't sure he could make it much longer. Sure, he'd only been "home" for less than a day, but he missed camp. No, he missed David. He missed Neil and Nikki and Gwen and all the stupid shit that they did together. He missed David telling him to watch his language. He missed always trying to skip out on the activities and having to cover for Mr. Campbell.

Max felt a tear slide down his face. He quickly wiped it away. There was no way in hell he was gonna be weak. Not here. At camp, around David, it was fine. But here, his parents would kill him if he cried.

As Max stared at the ceiling, he thought about how long he'd have to stay here. He doubted his parents would let him go back to Camp Campbell. Maybe he'd get lucky and they'd leave him with some nice relatives, although that wasn't very likely. Max looked at the clock and sighed. Only five minutes had passed. He knew he was the one that left David, but for some reason it felt like it was the other way around. Like David didn't try to keep Max from leaving. Max knew that wasn't the case, but he couldn't help his feelings.

Speaking of feelings, Max was pretty sure Jake liked him. He didn't want to assume things, but Jake always seemed to jump at the chance to spend time with him. Yeah, Lauren could be a little...much at times, but both he and Jake loved her to death. She was their best friend.

Max looked at the clock again. Not even an hour had passed since he had been allowed to go to sleep. He hadn't had anything to eat or drink pretty much all day, and he didn't think he'd be getting anything any time soon. Max knew he should jump at the chance to rest, but anxiety was a bitch that happened to have it out for him. He couldn't stop thinking about how this was all his fault. His thoughts were filled with "Maybe if I had done this," and "If I wasn't so much of that." He could imagine what David would be saying right now.

"Max," he'd say, "None of this is your fault. None of this was caused by you. You're wonderful."

Then David would hug him and let him skip the next few activities.

Max closed his eyes, trying hard to keep the tears from coming. Why'd he have to go and get attached to people? He knew something bad was gonna happen. Max just sighed.

He eventually fell asleep, his dreams filled with his friends and most importantly, David.
