Zaysha stared at Ella with both amazement and horror as she shoveled pancake after pancake into her mouth.
The two girls sat across from each other on the shiny red plastic cushions of their booth at Patty Cakes Pancake House. The once large stack of fresh pancakes that had sat between them now held the last remaining pancake, most of which Ella had already shoved into her mouth.
"That is absolutely disgusting" Zaysha pointed at the face full of pancakes across from her. "You're lucky that you're cute about it" she grumbled, trying her best to look annoyed.
Zaysha reached forward with her fork to stab the last pancake, but instead came in contact with the table. Ella had pulled away the plate at the last minute, and continued to finish off all the remaining pancakes.
"I only had two pancakes, you know," Zaysha noted. "Two pancakes. Out of twelve. Do you know what that means?"
"Uhhrmmf... yeshf? I was hungryphs..." Ella mumbled with her mouth still full.
"So was I!" Zaysha retorted
"Well you didn't eat them," Ella replied, grinning.
"wha-I DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE!"
"Whoa, buddy, chill its just pancakes," Ella replied, as if pancakes were something to take for granted. "Anyways, now that we have to share a room, I was thinking we could get a fish. I've always wanted a fish. Plus you don't have to walk them or anything and they just pee in their bowl! I think..." Ella trailed off, in thought.
"I mean I'm not that great with living things, but we could try?" Zaysha replied, calling over the check for their food.
Ella ignored Zaysha's comment, still deep in thought. "I mean, do fish pee? They have to, right? Which would mean they drink water. But they live in water. Do they pee?"
Zaysha rolled her eyes as they made their way out the door and into Ella's car, driving to the nearest pet shop.
As soon as Zaysha entered the fish isle, Ella tugged her over to point out a fish.
"Zee! Check out this one! It's so pretty! Let's get it!" Ella squealed, sounding like a kid in a candy store.
Zaysha was caught off guard by the nickname, the same name her brother had used for her when he was alive.
"Earth to Zaysha..." Ella waved a hand in front of Zee's face, snapping her back to reality.
Out of the corner of her eye, Zaysha spotted a white and orange spotted fish. It looked normal from the back, but when it turned to face her she noticed its eyes bulged out of its head rather dramatically.
"Ella," Zee spoke in a hushed tone, "I found the perfect fish."
