Leo awoke the next morning around 9, with the warm mid-morning sun streaming through the windows and quickly warming the room up. He shook himself awake, undressed and took a quick but much-needed shower. He greeted his housekeeper Lupe as she arrived for her cleaning appointment while he ate breakfast. Trying to distract himself, he turned his phone back on and saw Kate had tried to call twice more that morning, around 4 then 6, keeping in mind she was five hours ahead in London.
Leo's head throbbed somewhat from the slight hangover he was nursing. He took a couple of aspirin and downed a cup of coffee to chase the pain away. But it did not go away. He kept thinking of her. Thinking of Kate and how he'd hurt her but also how she had hurt him. He had to speak to her. He had to get on a plane for England.
Finally, he brought up his Virgin Airlines app to immediately get booked on the next flight to London. Ironically Leo was still on good terms with "Uncle Richard," aka Richard Branson, Ned's uncle. It was at Richard's luxury home fire on Necker Island back in 2011 that Kate had met Ned but at the same time had brought Leo and Kate closer together. Uncle Richard even know Kate and Ned were all but separated but he had bigger things to worry about, as another natural disaster, Hurricane Irma, had swept across the island and done devastating damage. Leo had called Richard a couple of nights earlier and had a friendly chat, making sure he was okay and asking if there was anything he could to to help. But all that was background noise. For the first time in his life he was in the position of being upset and apologetic to Kate at the same time. How fucked up is this, he thought as he boarded the plane and settled into his comfortable first class seat.
Within an hour Leo was high above the North Atlantic, ironically flying over the same area of water that over 105 years earlier, the Titanic had sank. That darn ship, that crazy movie that made the world weep and brought Leo to Kate. Stupid iceberg!
It was close to 6 pm before the plane touched down. Leo had already made arrangements to rent a car at Heathrow and drive straight to Sussex, to Kate's country estate. He didn't call ahead, he just wanted to get straight there. He wanted to see Bear and Mia and Joe. And most of all he needed to see Kate. The gray and purple light of the late summer dusk surrounded the fields of heather along the A24 motorway from London to Sussex. It could not come soon enough. Finally Leo saw the road sign for the village of Amberley and knew Kate's estate was just a couple of miles further north beyond the town. He turned down the road and made his way past the small cluster of cottages, an old church and castle and continued to make the beeline north, then turned down Pickford Lane, a gravel road leading to the estate.
He finally arrived and it was almost dark. He could see a few lights on inside as the headlights flooded the front yard. Leo got out of the car, grabbed his small travel bag and stood there for a second. Taking a deep breath, he made his way up the path to the front door.
It was almost a re-play of the scene in "Revolutionary Road," when April greets Frank at home the evening of his birthday after an argument the night before. Only this time, Kate opened the door with tears streaming down her face.
"Leo...." was all she could gasp out.
"Hey babe...." he croaked, catching a sob in his throat.
They practically ran to each other and their lips crashed together in a storm of passion, only ceasing to take a breath.
"Leo I'm so so sorry, you have no idea how sorry I am...." Kate gasped out.
Leo joined her in having tears running down his face as they continued to kiss as she pulled him inside and slammed the door behind him. He threw her up against the door.
"Where are the kids? Where's Bear?" Leo asked, looking around, stroking her legs.
"At my dad's....I knew you'd be coming. I knew you would...." she sobbed but managed to smile too.
"Oh I'm going to come," he smiled, breaking the ice and running his hands up and down her arms.
"Well you already did, darling....about six weeks ago and I have proof of it..." Kate smiled demurely, the tears stopping for a minute. Leo looked at her quizically.
"Leo....I'm pregnant....."
He could not stop the tears of joy and regret that steamed down his face.
"Oh baby....why didn't you say something before.....why?" he asked, ever so gently rubbing her belly.
Kate kissed a couple of Leo's tears away and said "I didn't want you to get too worried and anxious about me going to TIFF. I know how you hate seeing me work too hard when I'm pregnant."
"You really are glowing," he proudly told her, holding her in a tight embrace then kissing her again. "When?"
"Well of course it happened in St-Tropez silly," Kate smiled. "So I'm due in April. I'll finally be having a baby in the spring!"
"Never been on 'oliday with me?" Leo teased her in a mock British accent. "Jesus, can't we just for once conceive a kid in bed? We made Bear on a couch and this one on a kitchen table."
"Just like our characters in our movies having sex with one another," Kate quietly chimed in. "A car and a kitchen counter but no bed....maybe we'll just keep having sex in every room of the house until we get it right."
"Baby I really am sorry I yelled at you and got so upset," Leo poured out. "I guess maybe I am just a bit jealous of Idris but he's such a cool guy, I can't be mad at him. It's stupid. I just love you so fucking much.....well the fact you're pregnant with my baby again is all the proof I need....I guess sometimes I just wish we could be together...."
"Shhhh," Kate quieted him, putting her finger on his lips. "Remember the night we made Bear and I said the same thing to you and you told me we ARE together. Remember what that ring says?" Kate flashed the five diamond white gold ring Leo had given her 10 years before, still proudly sitting on her left index finger.
"I guess we'll have to go have it fitted for another diamond," Leo said, kneeling down and kissing Kate's belly, then conveniently pulling her shirt out out of the jeans it was tucked into and off over her head. He quickly removed his shirt as she moved in on his belt and zipper. They slowly undressed as they crossed the living room, then in one swoop Leo picked Kate up and gently carried her into her bedroom.
He tenderly made love to her, remembering they'd had sex when she was pregnant with Bear as well and remembering how weird.....but special it was. He gently ran his hands up and down her slightly fuller and more tender breasts and gently kissed her nipples, which were once again darker in color, indicating the influx of hormones. But most of all he loved caressing and kissing her belly, which once again held the precious life their love and passion had created. Her orgasms were just as strong, perhaps even stronger this time, knowing no matter what happened, Leo and Kate would always have each other. No fight, no conflict, no petty jealousy would ever come between them. No ocean could keep them apart and nothing on earth could come between them.
