My legs stumbled as I pushed open The Small Café's with my free hand. In the other I held my bag, a small over the shoulder bag. It had been stuffed with books and a laptop.
Immediately I am struck with the overwhelming scent of coffee beans. I scrunch up my nose, trying to block out the gross smell. I was neither a coffee or tea person. But I brought myself here as a quiet study spot before class.
The line was never long, it was never busy. At least not at 6:15am, when I usually showed up. I stood behind a tall, brown curly haired man. Looking at my feet, I rehearsed what I was going to say in my head.
I would like a chocolate milk, and a shortbread cookie please.
It played over and over, my stomach filled with butterflies as the group of men, moved along.
It's my turn.
I shouldn't be scared about this it's so simple. But I was.
I stuttered out my words to the barista, she was obviously sleep deprived, her blonde hair tied up, "I would like a chocolate milk and a shortbread cookie, p-please."
She rolled her eyes and started to type into the cash box, "6.50," her voice was monotoned.
I slowly handed her the money, she exchanged it for a small bag and a milk carton. A weary smile formed on my face, as I quickly turned and found my way to a couch in the corner. My legs collapse and I was cushioned by the leather seats.
A buzz arose from my laptop as it started to heat up and turn on. While it did that I opened my chocolate milk and peeked inside the bag. My stomach turned.
Sugar cookie.
I know it wasn't what I asked for, and most people would just return it. But the thought of the made me nervous. So I kept it.
My fingers pressed down keys, as I edited my paper. Ever now and then my dirty blonde curls would fall in my face and I brushed them off, or my round glasses would slide down my nose.
I had hours to perfect this. Considering my classes didn't start till 9am.
Engulfed in my work, I didn't pay attention to anything around me. Not the time, or the people. I only snapped back into reality, with the sounds of giggling, and pressure to the spot of the couch beside me.
Looking up, I scrunched my nose a bit, I saw two boys standing in the other side of the café looking at me. One was the one I stood behind in the line, tall, dark curly hair. The other had dark hair as well, although he was shorter and well built.
My head turned slightly to the pressure on the couch. Another guy starred at me. He was short too, but still I'm very short anyways. He had acne covering his face, and brown hair swooped to the side. The pressure was from his hand supporting him, as he leaned on it.
His hand waved at me as he sat down, "hello," it was a small gesture but nice. Although I couldn't seem to let any words out. My eyes widened. My stomach got its butterflies again.
So I did the first thing that came to mind. No it wasn't saying "hi" back. It want waving. It wasn't smiling.
I firmly grasped onto my milk carton, and started to chug. And chug. And chug. When I slammed down the carton, he starred at me, this time with concern and confusion on his face.
What did I just do?
